Question:

Cost of making another master bedroom in our house?

Two rooms in my house are never used and they are a mirror reflection of each other exactly the same size and everything. There is of course a wall between but I was thinking about remodeling the two rooms so they become one room. There is also a bathroom (right next to one of the rooms) I wanted to make bigger and enlarge; also wanting to mend the bathroom with the one big room if it was to become one big room (the two small rooms). Is this a plausible idea? Or no. Any idea of cost and approximate time it will take? Thank You

  1. Hi. I'm an architect in PA and saw your question. This is a perfectly good idea, assuming the wall to be removed is not a bearing wall. If you have a basement below it or an attic above it, check to see which way the joists or trusses are running; if they are parallel with the wall, it is most likely not a bearing wall and maybe taken out. If it's a bearing wall, it could be removed and replaced with a beam; obviously, you would need to consult with a structural engineer to determine that. The wall may contain wiring or plumbing lines, and those would need to be re-routed. Again, a review of the attic or basement might help to confirm that. Patching the ceiling is a minor project. Keep in mind you will want to remove one of the doors, along with the trim, and close the opening to match the adjacent walls. Also, are the windows in the two rooms similar? Will they look okay when the wall is removed? The bathroom expansion could be expensive depending upon what fixtures you will be changing or adding. Question: You said you want to expand it....into the space where this same new master bedroom would be? And what bathroom fixtures would you have?
