  1. Paris is not as spread out as you think. It is 6 km long maximum and most of it is very walkable. For instance you can easily walk from the north eastern part of the 16th district to the Galeries Lafayette and it's only 1.2 km from the Galeries Lafayette to the Sacré Coeur. La Défense (outside Paris in the Western suburb) is 5 km from the Louvre.

But transportation is not measured by distance but by zones. All of Paris is in zone 1. The suburbs go from zone 2 (close to Paris) to zone 6 (far from Paris). Métro tickets cover all métro stops regardless of the zone and all RER stops within zones 1 & 2 only.

You'll find all the answers to your questions on the tourist office website: http://en.parisinfo.com/paris-map/gettin...

The only thing is they haven't updated the prices which changed on July 1 so a métro ticket is now 1.50 €. It is valid for your whole trip, regardless of how many transfers you have, as long as you don't exit the métro station. The carnet of 10 is cheaper.

Here is also the public transportation authority website:

There are also weekly passes but you may not need them, read about them and decide if that's what you need or not.

  2. The basic Métro ticket is a small piece of cardboard (formerly mauve, now white) with a magnetic strip that costs €1,50. It's issued by RATP, the transportation authority for the Paris region. You can save money by purchasing a carnet of 10 tickets for €11,10 at the ticket window of any Métro station or from vending machines near the turnstiles. Ask for "une billet, s'il vous plait" or "un carnet, s'il vous plait." (A carnet is simply a stack of individual tickets that you can share with family or friends.)

  3. All the places you have named are within zones 1&2 which includes all of the city of Paris.

A standard ticket costing 1.50 euros will take you anywhere within zones 1&2.

  4. You'll probably be better off by purchasing a day pass or a week pass.  If you are using the Metro a lot, this is a great way to go.  You can jump on and off at will.  If you will only use it sparingly (after all Paris is a walking city) go with the bulk 10 pack.
