  1. dry cleaning a suit cost me about 1000 yen.

    shirts about 400

  2. I assume you're talking about washing and drying clothes.

There are coin laundries in Japan. They seem to be more common and easier to find then they were when I first came. How much it costs depends on the size of the machine and where you go. In most places, you can find a dryer that will give you anywhere from 9 to12 minutes for 100 yen.

Washing machines prices very by machine size. The smallest machines can cost anywhere from 400 to 600 yen per load. Bigger machines (blankets/futons) can be 1500 yen per load. Many machines provided their own detergent but others let you use your own.

So, a couple of loads could cost anywhere from 1000 to 2000 yen depending on how big a machine you use and how many times you use the dryer.

Some of these laundries provide better service than others. Some have nice new equipment while others have have older stuff. Sometimes, it's just a single room with one or two machines in it.

Japanese people don't seem to use coin laundries all that much. They are expensive and you sometimes have to be around people you don't know which can be awkward. These places are usually empty unless the weather is bad and people can't hang their clothes outside. Alot of people only use coin laundries for really big items like futons and blankets.

Unlike the US where many apartment buildings have some kind of common-use laundry from, Japanese apartment buildings usually don't have this type of thing. So, alot of Japanese people have some kind of washing machine at home or in their apartment. But, not many have dryers. So, most Japanese people spin dry their clothes in their washing machines and then hang them out to dry.

Recently washer/dryer combo units have increased in popularity but the drums tend to be quite small. So, even people who own one of those combo units still tend to hang out their clothes to dry to some extent.
