Question:

Cost on brake pads for a 2003 Mits. Lancer ES (NO Evo)...?

So I went to get my brakes done at an independent mechanic and the man was nice (with the occasional glancing at my chest) but he charged me $95 for parts and labor for the 2 front brakes..IS THAT A DECENT AMOUNT??

Then with an oil change that I knew I desperately needed, a full inspection on my car (and actually taking the time to show me the damages) and a tightening of my Serpentine Belt (that my dad was so kind to replace but apparently didn't tighten well since my car kept making a horrible and embarrassing screeching sound every time I turned it on..LOL...Also, guy friends at random times would say; oh your belts just need lubricating and/or tightening) the mechanic charges me in total $125.00 (with the $95 included)...IS THIS A DECENT AMOUNT??

I am a girl and well we all know that girls are oblivious to these things and get taken advantage...So I ask what would be the norm in price for servicing the car...I mean it was obvious the man was a bit of a pervert but not to the point of creeping me out...He said he usually charges $150-160 for front brakes alone...He said a good deal for me so that I may bring him more clientele...I stayed since I so desperately needed my breaks fixed (they were to the point of grinding the rotors)..

Before going to him I had gone to Brake Masters since I fell for the whole coupon thing of $56.00 on a brake change in which then I got suckered into $240 dollars (the first time I went to brake masters) since at that time my breaks "actually warped my rotors and they too needed replacement"....Then after that 1 x repalcement and fee of $240.00 the brakes would be free and then all I would pay is labor....Though this time mind you that I went in again (3rd time, the 2nd time I was charged just $70 with a little shaving off the rotors) thinking not too much damage just your squeeking noise but then 'Brake Masters' said I need to change both breaks and rotors again for $198 + tax...This sounded absurd to me so I decided not to do them there....That is when I went to this independent mechanic and then he charged me $95 just brakes alone...Told me just 1 rotor was slightly scraped (in which he showed me) but said it would be fine and no need for replacement....IS THAT TRUE??

So all in all.... DID I GET RIPPED OFF?? Please help and I appreciate anyone who took the time to read and/or respond...LOL...

Have a lovely week...

  1. I think $95 is a good price to pay for front pad replacement. I think he prob charged you one hour labour plus the price of the pads. The only thing is what quality pads did he sell you. Next time ask what the price is for the labour and parts separate. Check if you can bring your own parts and get them at http://www.highspeedautoparts.com/ They have really good prices.
