I would absolutely love to visit Ireland one day. Can anybody give me some tips about saving on cost or cheapest way to visit Ireland? I know about hostels and going in the off season. Anything else?

  1. You could hitch-hike, especially anywhere in the country (outside of Dublin).  It is still ok to do this in Ireland and can be great fun as in you will definately meet interesting people.  If you are female I would not do it alone.  People in Ireland gererally like tourists and like picking them up for the chat and a "bit of crack".  It will take you longer to get around the place and the weather might annoy you but it is worth a chance.  Also Ryanair offer really cheap filghts to Ireland from various destinations in Europe:   http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/

  2. The biggest way to save is to stay out of the cities except for day visits.  Bed and Breakfasts and hostels are everywhere and a great way to see the country and meet the people.  Food is cheaper outside the cities, the room is cheaper.

  3. I just got back from there and made plenty of mistakes...here you go....Best ways to save...

--Don't take taxis (the bus system is very efficient in dublin)

--Use ATM's sparingly and take out lots of money each time (the conversion fees from your bank are probably murder)

--Stay in a hostel, if you can

--Try not to drink alot (I spent alot of money on pints and whiskey...drink one day, take the next two off.   It'll do wonders for your head and your wallet)

--Do your research about doing things that are free (but don't restrict yourself based solely on that...plenty of museums are free, but it's definitely worthwhile to check out the Guinness storeroom which is about 14 euro)

--Don't eat in restaurants or takeaway....pub food is a little cheaper if you order the right stuff, and food you get from a grocer is the cheapest, though I'm not sure if you want to eat granola your whole trip...

--hotels are usually cheaper during the winter months, but the weather is absolute **** and many days get ruined because you ccan't see anything at all....but you will save a lot of money, like I did

    --don't get arrested (just kidding)

--lastly, don't think of euros as monopoly money...I know it sounds dumb, but you're not really used to this new weird money and none of it seems real as you watch it go out of your wallet and into the till....but it's real money, don't forget it.  But don't get me wrong...don't let money prevent you from having a good time.  I spent about twice as much money I wanted to when I went there, but I had an absolute blast, and it was well worth it.  Anyway, enjoy your trip brother.
