Question:

Cost to change rough-in valve in a shower already installed?

I currently have a 'Delta' shower fixture installed and bought a Moen. Moen fixtures are apparently made to work with their rough-ins so I have to change the rough-in valve if I want to use those fixtures. I have a fiber-glass shower that is already installed.

1. Approximately how much will a plumber charge to replace the rough-in valve or is this something I can do myself?

2. Do I need to remove the whole shower to change the rough-in?

3. I also want to change my tub fixtures as well. Do I need to remove the whole tub for that as well?

  1. See if you have an access panel in the wall behind the shower.  If not the plumber will have to make a whole and can put in an access panel at that time.  Without digging into the wall, I would guess around $300.

The other option is to gain access from the front and use a large cover plate for the hole.  They make cover plates to convert a two handle shower to a single handle shower.  Here is a link to one cover plate:

You can change the tub fixtures without removing the tub.

  2. Around $250, if you have all the parts, and the valve is accessible. If its sealed up in the wall...more $.

If you live in California or New York....triple it.

  3. well it can all be done without having to take down the whole shower. but for prices it all depends. call about 3 different plumbers to get free estimates. try not to call rooters. they are basically for clearing drains. call a  plumbing company
