Cost to fix A/C?

I have a leak in the freon line and a leak at the shreder valve on my central A/C unit (2006 Kenmore). I also need 1-2 lbs. freon. The quote is $650. Does that sound right to fix the 2 leaks and add freon?

  1. I am a licensed mechanical contractor. If indeed you have a leak as indicated, a simple cap can be added or replaced to solve the problem. Then the refrigerant can be installed. I charge about $10.00 per pound of R-22. One hour of labor can be anywhere from $50.00 to $125.00 depending where you live, or however long it takes to get to your house. It shouldn't take longer than that for this repair.  Hope that helps.

  2. HVAC Tech.:: Your problem is NOT as simple as some would have you believe. The R-22 must first be recovered, repairs (more than one) have to be made to refrigerant lines. next a vacuum needs to be pulled to confirm repair is good. Then system can be recharged. Any time there are multiple leaks it will take longer to find and fix them ALL, not to do so will cost you more in the long run. I think you got a fair and honest quote from your repairman. you could get a second opinion from a different company.
