Question:

Cost to replace A/C Unit?

Last night my A/C unit outside began making a loud buzzing sound and the blades stopped spinning. Now, all I'm getting is room temp. air out of my vents. I'm debating on having the current unit (8 years old) repairs or just replacing the a/c unit with a new one.

Can someone please tell me about what it should cost to replace the A/C with a new 4-5 ton mid-range A/C unit. I would prefer a decent brand....Trane seems to be too expensive. Perhaps Lennox or Carrier?

Please keep in mind that all I need ot the A/C unit replaced. I would like to leave my current furnace and duct work in place.

Thanks for your help!

  1. we just replaced a 10 ton and it was about 10K. It was a high efficiency with a lot of anti-allergy features and a humidifier.  If your unit is only 8 years old, surely they can fix it. ours was 30 years old.

  2. With the outside unit turned off can you move the fan blades by hand?  If they turn freely you may have lost the run capacitor for the motor.  This is either a round or oval looking can with wires running to the top of it.  With the power disconnected touch a screwdriver to the contacts on the top to discharge it.  Note which wires go to each contact. Remove it and take it to an electrical supply store or an HVAC supplier for a replacement.  Reinstall the new capacitor. Turn the power back on and everything should be working.  If the fan blades are hard to turn remove the motor and take it to an electrical supply store or an HVAC supplier for a replacement. Also it is not a bad idea to replace the capacitor at the same time.  (Have seen them go bad at the same time the motor goes out.) Be careful removing the fan blades they can be bent easily.  If you can't remove them ask someone at the store to help you. Check the speed, horsepower and rotation on the new motor.  They should match.  Reinstall the motor.  Turn the power back on.  Everything should be fine.

  3. I'm no ac man but i wouldn't start calling around for prices on a new unit you ll get burnt sounds like a relay or the unit is working to hard....dirty fins on outside unit (intake hose em off)

can she breath! plants weeds etc, "A" coil clean? filter! are the lines frozen (low freon or leak) sounds like it overloaded thermal switch kicked in. is the blower fan working!  belt broke
