I just got a window air conditioner. The Energy Star tag that came with it said the cost to run this air conditioner is $54 per year. Is that really only how much it will cost to run this thing?

  1. it depends on how often you run it, and at what temp....it will prob be under $100 though

  2. Find out the KW rating, and multiply that with your KW/h cost that appears on your power bill.

The KW rating on your air con is most probably a maximum, but it is possible it'll list a range of ratings dependent on your usage.

Example: I have a en electric oil heater. It has a rating of 2.4KW, my power bill is $0.20KW/h. To run this at full power it costs me $0.48 an hour.

  3. I think linda m is right..

    thats how they get you,,,,,,,,,,

say that your electric bill is $100.00 more a month when you are running it,,and you are running it for 4 months out of the year. That would be $400.00 extra a year that you are paying. BUT, the tag can claim that you are paying $33.33 a year by dividing the cost of usage by 12months. so if it is correct, you will be paying more than $100.00 extra a month, depending how many months you are using it.

  4. good question, I got one too just recently.  Everyone I have spoke with so far has told me its around $50, but I live in Pennsylvania.  Im not running this thing in the winter.

  5. I doubt it! I used to have a non Energy Star window air conditioner and when I ran it a few days/week in the summer the bill was around $100 for the month so I don't know how they got that figure....1200 to 54 difference makes no sense.

You can call the energy and ask how much energy it uses to burn at x degree setting for an hour, then call your Energy company and ask how much they bill for that much energy used and multiply that by the amount of time you'll be running it.

  6. I dont see how they would even have a clue, not knowing what what energy rate you are being charged. My window unit in one room, at our rates in the summer costs about $80.00 extra a month,,, So factor in that they are saying a year, including the months that you might mot use it.

So, for the 3 months that I do use mine, + the 9 months that I dont, divided by 240.00 (3x80.00)  So MY ari conditioner could say that its cost $20.00 a year, 20x 12=$240.00.....

When actually I paying $240.00 a year to run it,,,,,,,,,

If Im wrong, which sometimes I am and I will be the first to admit it,,,,,,,and it is true what your tag claims,,,,let me know where to buy one.

  7. That could be correct if you only turn it on in months that have a blue moon.
