  1. Puerto Viejo of Limon as opposed to Puerto Viejo of Sarapiqui, is a run down beach town that is vry popular among some tourists.

It is very pretty in some areas andhas a lot of nature but in the town there are a lot of drugs and and some car break ins.

Just be carefull and have a good time, lots of europeans and americans visiting a living there.

A 4x4 is advisable and can be rented anywhere, San Jose, Limon or Puerto Viejo.

There are several restaurants and hotels nearby, the best way to get there is the highway from San José west to Limon, then south to Puerto viejo, about a 6-7 hours trip.

  2. Puerto Viejo is lie another country inside Costa Rica. The town is not that great, at least thats my opinion. Its dirty and on some places dangerous.

You should stay at tourist places, there you wont have any problems. Also get the rental ars in san jose. Its easier, and usually you have more options.

Just remember to get a car with GPS, there are very few road signals and it’s easy to get lost along the way. The roads are pretty bad, a 4X4 is recommended, drive carefully, slowly and be ready for the unexpected. Don’t get directions from anybody, try restaurants, there are many who speak English that can help you. Also never travel at night unless its needed and don’t take passengers from the road

  3. A lot of people love puerto viejo. CR has both the Pacific and Caribbean sea. They are both very different. Limon is in the Caribbean and the population over there is mostly Jamaican costarican. A few hundred years ago Jamaicans moved to CR. So Limon is a cool experience. At some parts of Limon you will feel like if you were in Jamaica. They all speak 2 languages, Spanish and Patua ''A English dialect''

The beaches in Limon are very beautiful but they are also beautiful in the pacific.

  4. I was there last winter.  We had a great meal, a few drinks, and then the people I was with wandered off to find a hostel about 10:00 pm..in the dark.  They made it 2 blocks before they had a gun in their faces.  Lost their cash, laptop, back packs, i.d..  Believe it or not, they got the passports back and the laptop too...all the way from Limon.  One little police station, but they did their best. The locals were choked and the bad guys got ratted out in short order.  The "town" isn't much, but the 2 mile stretch into Puerto Viejo is all beach and tourist type places.  There's a place called Rockin Jays in P.V. that rents out tents..they have 100 on the second floor of a big building, cheap, too. Good bar, too.  Punta Uva has a wicked beach, and cabins as well.  Beautiful.  If you're driving be very careful...a lot of people get creamed passing semis on that raod...a lot.   Have fun!  Eyes open!
