Does anyone know if the Costa Rica Zoo in San Jose has a website? I've tried a few searches, and I can find info on the zoo, but not if they have their own site. I'm doing my searches in English though so that might be messing up my results. If not, does anyone know FOR SURE if they have a tapir? (type of animal). I'm going to Costa Rica with a class from my University and I want to find out more info about the zoo and what animals they have to convice my professor that we should go. With the tapir being endangered and all, I thought it would be a great chance to see one along with many other animals. Thank you!

  1. Not to confuse the issue, but while you're looking at brilliant animals (and the tapir surely qualifies), you may want to check to see if you can get a peek at some quetzals (the resplendant green birds). They are another animal that are fading away, and there are only a couple of zoos have them. I saw them at ZooAve, in alejuela , just outside of San Jose. Zoo Ave is a modest little bird rescue center that will only take a hour & a half to see everything, but does offer a unique opportunity to see the quetzal up close.  You may be able to see them at the other zoo, I'm not sure, but TRY ! I thought the tapir I saw in the wild was VERY cool !!! But seeing the quetzal was cool too, since it has such historical importance in latin american history ( especially in Mayan culture ).

  2. I have not been to the Zoo for a few years and from what I remember it is deplorable.  There were no Tapiers.  The Zoo is not clean.  What I remember most was when they fed the animals, the rats would come out and they would steal the food.  The Zoo in San Jose is horrible.... (at least it was last year....)

  3. Hi!  It does have a website: http://www.fundazoo.org/zoo.php

but, like the zoo, it's a very poor one.

The name of the San Jose zoo is Parque Zoológico Simón Bolívar.  It is a very simple, humble one.  They do have a "danta",which is a kind of tapir.

According to wikipedia, this is the definition of a danta:

Danta is the common name for the three species of tapir found in Latin America, the Baird's Tapir, Brazilian Tapir, and the Mountain Tapir. The name comes from the old Spanish word for an elk-like grazing animal. A young tapir is sometimes referred to as "dantica".

I found some info in English for you:

    And some more:

There is another zoo near San Carlos (far from San Jose).  They have tapirs there.  Here's the link:

  4. There is a website that can give some ideas about costa rica: travel2americas.com

    Hope the information is helpful
