Costa Rica comes in seventh place: Men´s NORCECA Championship - Volleyball
The 3rd of September saw a Men´s NORCECA Championship match take place in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, between Costa Rica and St. Lucia. The contest between the two sides was for the 7th place in the tournament and the resulting competition
ended after three sets that were each won by the Costa Ricans.
St Lucia could only hold their own in the opening set of the match and made it an intense and thrilling battle. However, the Costa Ricans prevailed in bagging a first set win that led them to start off the second set with flying colours. On the other hand,
the St Lucians did not manage to show any promise and miserably lost to the Costa Ricans. The loss of the first two sets triggered a forceful response from St. Lucia in the third set but they could not make it last until the end. Therefore, Costa Rica was
able to win the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-10 and 25-18.
The coach of the Costa Rican team, Cesar Salas, made the following comments at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “We´re taking back home our book full of notes to work in a better plan, it feels good to win and
I believe things were easier for us as they lost Octave Jason.”
On the other hand, the St Lucian captain, Richard Smith, commented on the performance of his team in this manner: “This is one more experience for us, and a good one because of the win, we came from less to more in the championship. We had some deficiencies
as well as St. Lucia.”
The first set of the match was fiercely competitive with no one sure where the tables would turn until the very end as the Costa Ricans took the lead and sped on to a set finish at 25-23. The momentum generated by winning the opening set of the game enabled
the Costa Ricans to take the lead in the second set early on and extend the advantage quickly. In no time at all, the St Lucians found themselves trailing far behind as Costa Rica went for another win at 25-10. St Lucia stepped up their game in the third set
but they could not stop the Costa Ricans from sealing the deal at 25-18.
The win that has brought Costa Rica the 7th place in the tournament was the first one they were able to achieve in the championship while they have incurred three losses.
The player that was able to post the highest number of points in the match was the Costa Rican Jeffry Calderon with 13 points while the St. Lucian Julian Bisstte registered the most points on his team by tallying 9 of them.
