Costa Rica falls to Canada after a tough competition – Volleyball News
Mexican city Ciudad Juarez provided the backdrop for a close match between Canada and Costa Rica on Wednesday. The two sides contested their skills for about 2 hours and eventually Canada emerged successful.
The XI Women’s Pan American Cup match covered its length in five sets and ended with following result: 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 25-16, 13-25, 15-13). The match was played in front of 500 spectators.
Sarah Pavan of Canada was under the spotlight throughout the match. She performed exquisitely well and totalled match-high 18 points. She was followed by her sister Rebecca Pavan who contributed 11 points.
On the other hand, Verania Willis and Karen Cope fought for Costa Rica and finished with 16 points apiece. Likewise, Angela Willis and Mijal Hines added 10 points each in the failing effort.
With perfect combination of players, Canada opened the match on a happy note. Pavan Sisters had a great chemistry between them, which allowed them to take good points. Opening set of the match ended in Canada’s favour as Costa Rica trailed behind and could
not catch up with the Canadians.
Costa Rica responded in the second set and successfully covered the deficit. CRC posted 25-18 on board to claim the set, which tied the game score at 1-1. Canada returned in the game in third set and once again pushed the opponents behind. The game score
tied at the end of fourth set as Costa Rica proved its potential and created the dead-lock of 2-2.
In the decisive 5th set, Canada and Costa Rica staged a great battle. However, Canada proved to be better and captured the final set. Canada won the match and celebrated victory.
“Costa Rica played a full game and with an impressive defense and both teams had their momentum,” Canada’s captain Brittney Page said. “We felt a sense of urgency and some desperation, because we felt scared to lose in the fourth set, but capitalized point
by point in the end.”
“We fought hard enough in this match and you could see it on the court,” Verania Willis said. “We haven’t played like this before against Canada. We had some errors when closing, but I am glad with the way we played.”
The mentor of Canadian team Arnd Ludwig was satisfied with the result. However, he was not happy with the way his team committed too many unforced errors, which added to the length of the match.
The Costa Rican Coach Xavier Perales regretted the loss, but he was happy with the amount of effort that his players put in the match.
Canada is scheduled to clash with Argentina in the next match on Thursday, while Costa Rica will go against Trinidad & Tobago on the same day.
