Costa Rica falls to Cuba in the third match of U 19 Continental Championship – Volleyball News
After beating French Saint Martin on day-2 of the U 19 Boys’ NORCECA Continental Championship, Costa Rica failed to repeat the same act in third match on Wednesday. Costa Rica dropped the decision to Cuba in straight sets.
Caribbean boys from Cuba totally dominated the scene and sent 25-14, 25-12, and 25-13, in order to earn the winning status. They claimed victory on account of better attack and solid defence. The match took place at the Centro de Alto Rendimiento sports
hall in Tijuana, Mexico. A crowd of around 400 people witnessed the live action of volleyball.
Cuba maintained its flawless run in the tournament and finished the opening round of the NORCECA Continental Championship without any loss. The team of head Coach Rodolfo Sanchez staged a consistent performance and finished all three matches in straight
sets. Success in the pool-play enabled Cuba to book a slot in the semis of the tournament. Cuba went into semis from Pool A, while hosts Mexico clinched semi-final berth from Pool B.
Santiago Uriarte of Cuba topped all the scorers with his match-high 10 points. He also emerged as the only play in the match, who went into double digits.
Costa Rica was hardly a match for strong Cuban squad that had already defeated two teams in the competition. Caribbean heroes enjoyed a great form and jumped an early lead in the first set. They showed no mercy and hit the ball from all angles. Costa Rica
seemed to have problem in defence and suffered too many set-backs. Cubans continued with hard-hitting and stretched out the gap of points. They locked Costa Rica at 14 and achieved the set points (25-14).
Using the competitive edge of first-set win, the Cuban team put more pressure on the competitors in the second set. They covered every inch of their half and did not allow the opponents to score so easily. Costa Rica trailed behind and eventually lost the
second set with fair margin of 13 points. In the third set of the match, Cuba maintained its dominance and pulled off success, 25-13. Cuba finished the match in straight sets and celebrated victory.
In the next run, Cuba will return to action in the semi-final match whereas Costa Rica will have to go through the quarter-final stage. Costa Rica is scheduled to take on USA on Thursday in the first quarterfinal match. US team got defeated by Mexico in
the last pool-play match on Wednesday.
