  1. See Arenal Volcano from the town of La Fortuna.

  2. I would have to agree, CR has tons of natural beauty...I will never forget it.

The post above mine is a very good post.

  3. I'm from Costa Rica, the most important thing that you should know is that you don not want to stay in the central valley (San Jose). Monteverde is a really nice place if you are into natural buety, but if your looking for something more adventerous and fun, go to the beach. The Pacific ocean is the best choice, there are many hotels there, who can help you with basically anything you want to do. If you can afford it, I would recommend Paradisus Playa Conchal. It's a beutiful hotel with tons of things to do, I go there twice or even thrice every year.

    Good luck in your trip,

    Pura Vida, Mae

  4. I was in Costa Rica for a year, I travelled all of it and stayed in so many places! You are going to have lots of fun.

So, from my experience you should visit:

The volcanoes. Irazu is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and Arenal is the most active one. This particular volcano has the second widest crater in the world with the diameter being one and a half kilometers. There is also the Arenal Volcano, the only volcano in Costa Rica that's constantly active, and the Poas, a stratovolcano with several eroded calderas, cones, and two crater lakes at or near its summit.

The National Parks. Costa Rica has been known for its natural environment and the diversity of the bio-life there. Choose between Poás Volcano National Park, Palo Verde National Park, Cahuita National Park and Arenal Volcano National Park.

Try and go for hiking on one of the many amazing trails in Costa Rica. I hope you are fit! Hike a rainforest, near a volcano or along the coast. Nearly all of Costa Rica's national parks have short trails that can be hiked in an hour or two, while others have routes that take the better part of a day to complete, such as the trails to the top of Barva and Rincón de le Vieja Volcanoes. There are also plenty of well marked hiking trails.

Oh, and don't hesitate to visit local restaurants and try anything they have, the local food is delicious. I once went to a typical CR family for dinner and they served beef tongue, today I'm still craving it! Lovely people too!

Also, try and go to as many beaches as possible , my favorite is in Guanacaste, Playa Conchal, an amazing tropical beach made entirelly of crushed shells! http://beaches.incostaricaguide.com/

You should also go diving or snorkelling in Costa Rica's beautiful Reefs. Again, my favorite is the most studied Cahuita National Park coral reefs, close to shore.

Don't forget to see the lakes and rivers, I suggest the Río Grande de Tárcoles, a river full of Crocodiles, Scarlet Macaws, Jesus Christ Lizards, and over 120 species of birds. There is also San Juan River with jungle trails! And for the lakes, Lake Nicaragua, the second largest lake in Latin America, and Lake Arenal near the volcano, the largest in Costa Rica which offers all year round windsurfing, fishing, boat tours, kayaking, horseback riding & mountain biking along the shore, etc.

I would also suggest that you visit the capital, San Jose, to get a glimpse of city life in CR, oh, and go shopping at the amazing big Mall in Escazu!

Well, that's all, I hope I helped! Take your time, have an open mind and an adventurous spirit and I assure you that Costa Rica will be an amazing experience that you will talk about for years!

  5. Hi, I went to CR five years ago and I still dream about it all the time when I sleep.

It really depends on what your looking for in a vacation; e.g. there aren't really any ruins or jungle shrouded pyramids to see there, so you have to be into seeing natural beauty. I don't like to go too touristy so I stayed away from the resort areas.

I recommend the Monterverde area as a good place to start. It's up in the mountains and the well preserved forest is really something to behold. Everything is shrouded in mist and life is just piled deep, plants growing on plants. When I went, there was a tree-top tour where you ride these rip lines through the trees and it was worth the fear.

I had a great time on the beaches on Nicosia. I stayed just north of Samara (at Playa Nosara) and there was plenty of to do, or not do if you want. Rent a kayak in Samara and paddle out to the island or there is a beach about 20 miles up the coast from Samara where the sea turtles come out on to the sand to lay eggs. (Can't recall the name of that beach but it began with an 'o'.)

Also spent time in Liberia, a decent size town in the north. They were having some kinda festival like a running of the bulls thing. I ust stumbled upon it so I never really got the skinny on the sourse of the celebration, but the whole town turned out. They had a "bullfight" in the local arena, but it was more like a rodeo: no blood, they just let the bulls out and then kids from the town try to haze the toros to impress their friends. Then they had guys ride out and rope the bulls back into the pen. I don't know what there is to do in Liberia when the festival isn't happening there, but I can tell you that the people were so welcoming and that you shouldn't be afraid to just go somewhere to surround yourself with the local flavor.

I hope you find this post helpful and thet you have fun there.

    PS: They have monkeys.

  6. The night night all through Costa Rica is great.

Their restaurants cost a fraction of what they do here in the States and the food there is out of this world!

They have set aside 25% of their land for special parks and Public reserves which includes, rain forests, cloud forests, jungles, swamps, rivers, beaches, etc. that are beautiful and inexpensive to enjoy.

Tourist attractions:  Way too many to list!  But here are a few: Horse Back riding, White Water Rafting, River excursions, Hiking, Tours to the Volcanoes, coffee plantations, flower yards,  Fantastic surfing and great fishing in the Pacific on the West coast, Then they also have these "Jungle Rides" where you ride strapped in a harness on a Steel Wire line stretched between hills and allows you to "fly" over the flora and fauna far below you that is mind boggling, lots of gambling Casinos, etc. etc. etc.

    Good Luck or Buena Suerte!

    VIVA LA PURA VIDA!

PS!  - The towns people of Liberia watch the planes coming in and leaving from their "International Air port" which consists of two runways when they have nothing else to do other than watch the paint dry on their houses.
