  1. Costa Rica originally actually rose up from the sea about three million years ago along with that portion of Panama which borders it on the South.  Before this there was no land mass connecting North America to South America.

Due to its location, Costa Rica was in the Center of trade between the North American and South American Native indians.

Spanish explorers visited its shores in the mid 1500s and found the native Indians wearing gold on their arms and head bands which resulted in the country being called "Costa Rica" which means "rich coast".  The Jungle was so dense that the Spanish explorers could not get into the Central part of the country and it remained inhabited by the Indigenous tribes that lived there.

Its first Capital was Cartago but was later changed to San Jose with both cities being located in the "Central Plain" which sits approximately 3,800 feet above sea level.

They had a revolution there in the 30s - which led to them totally disbanding their "Military" in l945 so they do not have any Army - and decided to contribute all of the money they saved to go towards the Health and Education of the Costa Rican citizens.

  2. The History of Costa Rica

Costa Rica was actually a part of intermediate area between the Andean and the Mesoamerican cultural regions. Now these have been recently updated to include the Isthmo-Colombian area.

Costa Rica was first visited by Christopher Columbus in 1502 and he reached the Isla Uvita. There was subsequent wars and resulting colonization in spite of the ferocious resistance of the indigenous people.

In the 16th Century Costa Rica faced a great fall in her workforce as the indigenous people fell to the diseases carried by the colonists. Costa Rica won her independence in the year 1821 from the massive empire of Spain.

Several countries of Central America like Mexico and Guatemala had fought hard to achieve this status but Costa Rica did not even fire a single gunshot. This is why Costa Rica is considered to be a very peace loving country.
