Hi, I am going to stay in Germany for more than 1 year, I would like to make an estimate of how much I am going to spend monthly.I want to know how much does it cost on average to rent an appartemnt for one year in berlin (4 bedroms or more , furnished)? How much would a family of 2+an infant need to spend monthly on average? How much does it cost to buy a decent (nit fancy) car?

Thank you

  1. Is not cheap in Germany. This size Apartment with furniture's will be cost more than 1000 Euro. And also you need to pay for Heating/Power/Phone all that extra money.

Monthly for living you need between 700-800 Euro for your family.

Not fancy car: new ones cost over 20.000 Euro, used good ones you need to spend between 8000-10.000 Euro.

    Expensive cities are: Munich/Hamburg/Frankfurt/M.,/Berlin.

  2. For Telecommunication you must calculate around 80€ (mobile, Internet, landline)

For insurance etc. you must calculate around 100€ (cars, house etc.)

For a flat you must calculate between 6€/m² and 15€/m² (depends between small cities and big cities like Düsseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg or the south of Germany with Stuttgart, München or Karlsruhe) for a flat between 80 - 120m²

In addition to this you must calculate cost for energy, water, trash etc., which can be additional 200 -300€ for such a flat.

For a car you must calculate around 700€ if you want to lease it (normally 1 year contracts are not such familiar in this country).

For food you should calculate 200€ per Person.

The normal living cost (cinema, parks etc.) are similiar or a little bit cheaper as in the US.

  3. Seeing the US dollar is weaker than the Euro it will be even more expensive than it used to be years ago.

Fliege is correct. It is expensive esp in the cities, usually the outskirt villages are less expensive. You can buy a car or lease one, or just use the public transportation, their buses and trains are great.

everything she said about utilities and rent is accurate.

  4. Fliege is right, I would even think he is a bit on the cheap side.  A 4 bedroom apartment in Berlin is probably more like 1,600 Euros unless you want to live in Wedding.  I have a 1 bedroom and it is 750++.

Do yourself a favor and skip the car, just use public transport.  Cars are a pain in the a$$ here and the driving laws very strict.
