We're interested in purchasing a piece of land and are trying to figure out how much it costs to connect to existing power and sewage that is available in the street. We're in QLD Australia

  1. You can contact the power company eg. Energy Australia and get a rough quote and you can do this with sewerage as well. Sewerage you contact your local council. But be ready for a big bill as costs all depends on how far it is to extend.

I recommend to get these figures first before purchasing

  2. Queensland is a vast state, nearly as big as mine. You must contact the shire council in the area you are/have purchased land in. They SHOULD have all the necessary documentation and answers you will need to make an informed decision. There are many 'odd' sorts of things that you just would not think of at the time of purchasing, like 'the building envelope' where you are NOT allowed to cut down trees, etc. Ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse for NOT knowing what you could or could not do, should you make a mistake down the track! Leave no stone unturned and check, check and check everything again. Get everything IN WRITING and signed and witnessed and secure them for use at a later date, if needed. Sorry to put a dampener on things, but better safe than sorry!   Good luck.

  3. I am in the same situation, but in Victoria. I am trying to find out these costs as well before I purchase my land. So far I found out , that the power company would give you an estimate quote after a waiting period of around one month and  after you apply for the quote in writting . Very impractical if you - like myself - are thinking about the purchase of the land.

    So....

So far I was able to estabilish that if you will need your own  transformer on a pole near your house it alone will cost $10000. Sometimes one transformer is used by two or three houses. Nobody told me how do you find out about it however . If the closest electrical pole is further then 40m to your house then you may need to bring the electricity closer and then for every 50 m you will need one pole worth $1000 .

That is as much as I know. Sorry I do not know any more to help

It would be interesting to hear from people who have recently dealed with these issues.
