Im making a costume, and the character that im making is kind of square, like spongebob, except rounded at the corners. In order for it to look right, i plan to make it out of felt, but i dont know how make it retain the square-ish shape, and still stay securely on the person wearing it. I was going to try a box, but i wasn't sure if it would work...i dont want to if i dont have to... Any ideas?

  1. A big box would work.  Paint it. I just dont know how to get the corners round

  2. i would do the wire idea and then thay way you can add any kind of fabric u need. i wouldnt do the box or anything stiff or the person wearing it wont be able to sit down without taking it off. that gets to be a pain. also when using the wire be sure to secure all end pieces so no one gets stuck. good luck! u oughtta psot a pic of it when u are done!

  3. when you go to home depot, there are many different kinds of wire with different tensions. some wire will retain its shape even after bending, springing back to the way it was. you could easily bend it into a square shape with rounded corners, and even if it was sat on, it would spring back to the way you bent it. ask a guy at home depot, tell him what you want to do.

  4. Don't use felt. Use quarter inch foam. I make costumes from it all the time. (Think of the guy dressed as a Big Gulp on Reno 911) You get a nice stiff shape, you can sit down in it, and you can make rounded corners when you sew the box shape. You can glue on whatever felt or fur you want.

If your local fabric store doesn't have foam, find a shop that sells upholstery supplies.
