Cotto Vs Paul Williams? Read all before Response?

At one point I thought Williams would be Cotto's toughest opponent but after some thought. A person that is 6 ft. tall and weights 138-151(Williams, is 6'1) is a considered a small framed body and Cotto who is 5'7 would be considered to have a big frame at 147.

We also know about Cotto's punching power and constinant attack to the body. I belive if Cotto gets on the inside he can K.O. Williams and despite Williams long arms Cotto has Good defense unlike Quintana. Cotto also hasnt been knockdown since his Torres fight back in 2005 despite people saying he has a weak chin.

I dont belive Williams small frame can take the body punches. Cotto by K.O. What do you think the outcome would be and why?

- The link below is a good example of Williams small frame and my Reasoning that he wouldn't be able to take Cotto's body punches.

  1. I agree entirely.  Williams, I believe, would be eaten alive on the inside, especially to the body.  Cotto would not be bothered at all by Williams' high volume attack since it's mostly powerless arm punches.  I wouldn't be stunned to see Williams make the 12 rounds (he's no bum), but the most likely scenario is a late round stoppage due to accumulated body damage.

  2. Williams defense is not that good but good chin. Cotto chin is not that good and his defense is not all that good. Cotto likes to square up infront on his fighter. Mosley was able to stand infront of Cotto and hit him with some big shots that stund him. He hit Cotto in 10th round, while Cotto was trying to move backwards and box. Cotto was hurt but stop for water on the mat. Paul Williams is a south paw with a high work rate and good stamina. For Cotto to get in, he would have to take a punch. Paul is a boxer and will keep the jab in Cotto face. Cotto is not a complete boxer but they are trying to make him box, after the Mosley fight. Cotto said the Mosley fight made hims fight on a different level now. Paul has the reach. Paul learn his leason from that fight with Quintana and knock him out in the first round. I would be a odd fight because of the different styles. I dont see it been a cake walk for each other.

  3. I think you are exactly on the money with this.  Margarito couldnt pressure him because he was not fighting his fight.  He was trying to ko him with one punch.  Cotto however how he ducks down and hes alot faster than margarito will get thru his arms hammer away at the body.  Williams has a excellent chin but i agree when u say his body is very small and looks weak and cottos shots would make a dent in it.  Cotto is strong fast and would definately beat williams.  Quintana fought a good first fight he didnt really get on the inside williams chose to fight on the inside.  With cotto he would get eating up, i think if they fight after a couple rounds williams legs will wobble and he would try and run but cottos quickness KO's him late.  But also Pavlik might fight Paul Williams very weird to see williams at middleweight with pavlik, williams power was good his last fight , but i think he would get KILLED agaisnt pavliks constant attack and pressure. Good question.

  4. You might very well be right, but I also think that Williams height could actually make things very difficult for Cotto. If he can control the fight with this jab, he may limit Cotto's chances to get inside and land his punishing body blows.

I personally would pick Cotto to win that match-up, but I think it's a very good fight!

  5. This fight is a lot harder for Cotto than most people think. Paul Williams has great reach,Speed and has a very high punch out put which is a problem for any fighter.

Miguel Cotto would have to press the action with Williams. The problem with that is Williams extremely high punch volume and Cotto's chin. People always say "Cotto's Chin is fine he fixed it" chins don't get fixed. IF Paul Williams can be paitent use his speed,Jab,Reach,Punch Volume Cotto would have a h**l of a time with him.

I am not just going to Jump on the Cotto bandwagon. I don't think he can Beat Paul Williams. The style match up is overwhleming. If he can manage to Cut the ring off and attack his body he can win put I don't think he is fast enough too do that yet.

  6. Cotto, in my opinion, has a small to medium frame, he is not a large-framed person. I don't think Cotto will beat him as easily as you think he will. Williams is able to keep his opponents away from his body because of his stance and his newfound jab, his foot is placed forward so that any opponents can't just charge in without being countered. I am not saying that Williams will win, I am just saying, Williams IS a big threat to Cotto. I think some people may have to reevaluate Williams' power after the Quintana fight, as those punches he hit Quintana went seemed hard. "Powerless arm punches" usually don't result in 1st round knockouts. In any case, I think the fight is closer to a toss-up than anything. Personally, I would favor Williams in this fight, but I want to see Williams fight again before I make my final judgement on that, because seeing him fight for 2 minutes against Quintana was a little insufficient, at least in terms of making a conclusion about his improvement as a fighter. You shouldn't necessarily judge Williams ability to take a punch entirely on his lean build. If his body was really as easy to exploit as it looked, he would not have made it this far...trust me.
