  2. Cotto has definitely faced better competition. He has fought a future hall of famer, Sugar Shane Mosley, and Cotto has also fought Zab Judah and other very respectable opponents. The only people that come to mind right now for Margarito is Joshua Clottey and Kermit Cintron, and they are not in Shane's and Zab's league.

  3. Though they both fought the same amount of decent or better fighters, in my opinion, Cotto has fought more of the bigger names, like Shane Mosley, Zab Judah, Carlos Quintana... giving him a slight edge.

  4. Here are the former champs/titlholders that Miguel Cotto has beaten:

~Carlos Maussa (TKO 8)- former WBA junior welterweight titlist

    ~Lovemore N'dou (W 12)- former IBF junior welterweight titlist.

~Randall Bailey (TKO 6)- former WBO junior welterweight titlist.

~DeMarcus Corley (TKO 5)- former WBO junior welterweight titlist.

~Ricardo Torres (KO 7)- former WBO junior welterweight titlist.

~Paul Malignaggi (W 12)- current IBF junior welterweight titlist.

~Carlos Quintana (TKO 5)- former WBO welterweight titlist.

~Zab Judah (TKO 11)- former junior welterweight and welterweight champion.

~Shane Mosley (W 12)- former lightweight, welterweight, and junior middleweight champion.

Here are the former champions/titleholders and notable names that Margarito has faced:

~Daniel Santos (NC 1 and L 10)- former WBO welterweight titlist, former WBO junior middleweight titlist and current WBA junior middleweight titlist.

~Andrew Lewis (TKO 2)- former WBA welterweight titlist.

~Kermit Cintron (TKO 5 and KO 6)- former WBO and IBF welterweight titlist.

~Joshua Clottey (W 12)- challenging for a belt next month.

~Paul Williams (L 12)- former and current WBO welterweight titlist.

Cotto is unbeaten against all of the elite competition that he has faced, while Margarito has lost to Daniel Santos and Paul Williams.  When you compare the level of opposition that each has faced, I think that you have to agree that Cotto has faced the better competition.  In my opinion, beating Mosley, Judah, and Quintana outweighs beating Clottey, Lewis, and Cintron.  I'm picking Cotto to win by close decision, but remember that just because you've faced the better competition doesn't always mean that you are the better fighter because styles make fights.  Basically what I'm saying is that I'm going with Cotto but I wouldn't be surprised to see Margarito win.

Edit: Margarito won by 11th round knockout proving that just because you've beaten the better opposition, it doesn't mean you're the better fighter.
