Cotto’s Attorney: Miguel Cotto has a lot of challengers in line – Boxing News
Miguel Cotto lost his title to Floyd Mayweather on May 5. However, the pugilist has not lost his popularity. According to his attorney Gaby Penagaricano, Cotto has been getting offers from numerous promoters but he is not interested right now. He added that
Cotto wants to take his time to make the best decision.
He added, “The phone's ringing off the hook.”
Cotto is currently looking forward to Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. However, Martinez’s promoter Lou DiBella believes Martinez will definitely face Cotto but he is not sure when. He added, “I want the best fight I can get for Sergio. While Sergio
really wants Chavez's WBC belt, I'm not sure Chavez will really fight Sergio if he beats Andy Lee. I do think Andy Lee would fight Sergio if he wins [June 16]. So Cotto, certainly in showing he's fit, strong and putting on a spirited fight against Mayweather --
maybe he can fight Sergio.
Similarly, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has until next week to find an opponent for Marquez. He added that the opponent could be either Brandon Rios or Erik Morales.
He added, “You're dealing with somebody who says exactly what he wants to say at any given time, and nothing he says is set in stone. It's a sense of entitlement: Repeat the lie until people believe it.”
Arum further said that Mayweather does not want to fight Pacquiao and that Pacquiao deserves a 50-50 split if both of them go head to head.
He added that Mayweather is just pretending to negotiate when he actually does not want to. According to Arum, Mayweather wants guaranteed money and Pacquiao deserves it too since they both are of the same calibre.
For now, Cotto does not seem to have an opponent in line for his next bout. Most of the top-notch pugilists are already scheduled and Cotto does not have any options left. Probably he will have to wait for Sergio Martinez’s answer. If Cotto gets Martinez,
it will definitely be an entertaining fight for fans. However, Cotto should be cautious now since another unbeaten fighter can add another loss to his portfolio.
