Question:

Cough medicine & piercings while breastfeeding??

by  |  earlier

I want my nose pierced. & I know you shouldn't while pregnant. But do the same rules apply if you breastfeed?

Also, I have had a cough and some congestion for the past few days and it is driving me crazy and starting to hurt. I want to take something for it, but I am not sure what is safe. Any recommendations?

Thx!

  1. As for the piercings...

Personally, I would wait till after you are done breastfeeding to get that done.

If you've waited this long, a little bit longer won't hurt.

    For your cough...

You can take Robitussin. You can also take cough drops to help sooth your throat. You could even take plain tylenol for a headache.

    * I am a breastfeeding momma myself. When I had a cold, my doctor said that I could take all of this and there be no effects towards my baby while I nursed him.

If you want more info as to what all you can do and not do...

I would recommend that you visit this site.

It is a site for breastfeeding mommas!

I visit this site 24/7 if I need help.

This site allows you to speak to a nurse any time you need help or information.

  2. You should not self medicine especially you are breastfeeding your baby. See your doctor and let him know that you are breastfeeding so that he can give you suitable medicines for you. Normal cough medicines or even stronger ones are not suitable for breastfeeding at all.

  3. I would wait to get any piercings until you are done breastfeeding. It is just safer to wait.

As for cold/cough medications, they generally recommend that you dont take any of that while pregnant/breastfeeding as it is passed along to the baby.
