I have asked this question before and i got alot of good answers. But Major is still coughing! He mostly just did it when he was running though. I have been giving him shots of penicillin everyday and it seems to be working but only a little. I'v been giving him 10cc of it. Do you think that will eventually start working better?! Also, does anyone have anything else i can try?!

  1. what are u feeding ur horse? moldy hay will cause cough, esp alfalfa. corn can cause burn out, if a horse gets way to much.

  2. First, did your horse have a temperature?  Does your horse have allergies or drainage from it's nose? Has the vet seen him? He may need a bronchio dilator. I have 98 mini horses and a few of them cough.most are allergic to grass from June to near winter/fall. Some have asthma and/or a buggery nose. Penicillin will not help with asthma or COPD in horses.  It will help only if the allergies which triggered the cough have caused an infection.  We also have some horses which are sensitive to heavy Ozone days.

We are in southeast Texas and the heat and humididty always bring on summer coughs.

  3. hah.

my horse was coughing when i rode him.

he was just tired and acted like he was sick so i would stop.

but i dont think that thats the case for yours!

    he should be getting better

if you have the money, ask the vet to come out

  4. EQUST has a really good thing on all the resone horses cough in the march issue. the whole thing was divoter to that I would have you some tips but i think you should read it you not giving me enought info to diegnose your horse. iof he does it when your working him it might just be warm  up cough.

  5. He might just be out of shape, since it happened while you were running? My horse does this if I have not ridden her in a long time and stuff. But if it has persisted then you should call your vet out.

  6. do you warm him up before you run him or just saddle him up, get on and go straight to a run?

if you spend a little time just walking and trotting him around before you run then that will help him to get adjusted to the run

  7. It is NOT a good thing to put your horse on long term antibiotics, even in small dosses. I hope you have consulted your vet about this cough. There are many things it could be. Several years ago I had a horse with a chronic cough and it turned out to be a terminal lung disease and we had to have him euthanized. I have a horse right now with a chronic cough, and he has been diagnosed with COPD. I know all too well how high vet bills can be, but I also know it is better to be safe than sorry.

  8. you should only give penicillin for 5 days and no more. That is a very small dose.  Usually it's a 20cc dose that is given.or it sounds like it could be:  Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease or COPD is similar to human Asthma. It is an allergic reaction to dust causing obstruction to the air passages in the lungs of horses. It generally affects horses ages six and older, who are stabled, eat hay, and/or live in dusty areas.
