Question:

Could Gilligans Island happen today?

OK we've all seen the 1960's show Gilligans Island where a boat gets caught in a storm and ends up on a remote deserted island perhaps hundreds of miles off course, with no chance of being found. What if this happened today and the boat was not equipped with any technology such as a radio or emergency beacon? Would 21st century technology locate them easily or would it take years or might they be never found?

  1. there is somthing magical called......technology

  2. It couldn't happen, even when it was made.

  3. When pigs fly it can

  4. Lost is a show that is like Gilligans Island but with 21st century tech. It can happen, its just much less likely. Technology can always fail and it could take months to scout the area where the last call was made.

  5. First off, all boats have to have radios and such.

They could easily track you down by the path you took, the last coordinates you sent through the radio, etc.

  6. Shows like Lost and Gilligan's Island assume that there are deserted islands out there  with a salubrious climate that have no native population despite being large enough to have rivers fed by rainfall and large areas of arable land.

Sorry but all the livable islands have long since been claimed and settled. Settlers even reached Easter Island, about the remotest spot on Earth from any other land.

There are no such vacant islands  on the planet. If you want a desert island you will have to settle for one no one lives on like the sub-Antarctic islands: South Orkneys, South Sandwich or French owned Kerguelen islands in the southern Indian Ocean.

Formerly visited by whalers or sealers, no one lives there permanently for very good reason. They are cold or at least cool, rainy, windy and without arable land to raise crops. Wastelands.

  7. With today's technology I wouldn't think so.  And the television show "LOST" is fictional, dude!

  8. Of course it can happen today.  There are so many uninhabited remote islands out there.

  9. It was a tv show..not a true story. I don't think it would have happend then either.

  10. i LOVE that show

  11. Haven't you been watching "Lost"!

  12. you like living in a dreamworld? won't happen!

  13. possibly but wouldnt want that to happen

  14. Well if the boat didnt have that stuff on there.

How would anyone know where to look.

Another good showing of this, is the movie CASTAWAY.

Unless someone happens to show up on some islands you could be screwed.

Another problem is, that if people just saw a boat on shore, it is unlikely they would give two thoughts about it, other than a hey look at that.

    So it is possible.

Keep in mind though, that around the world, many governments check islands for DRUG smugglers, and Arms Dealers, and Illegal aliens.

So it is more likely that they would be spotted farely soon.

    GOOD LUCK

  15. It is impossible to be lost or stranded on a dessert isle today. Have you tried Google mapping? There is virtually nowhere on earth you can hide.

Satellites now can see everywhere. The best satellite imaging can pick out a soda can on the street. They can even see at night using thermal imaging and infrared.

If you are an important enough person or have relatives with money to burn, they can locate you with satellites within minutes.

Telling someone to get lost is easy. Actually getting lost today is hard.

  16. Well, 21st century technology helps us locate such easier than what it was in 1960. I believe if such happened in todays world that they would be found in time eventually and not be left to be unfound.

  17. You are missing something..I'll call it the Mary Ann factor.

I can barely buy the fact that a celeb, a super rich couple, and a world famous scientist would get on the same boat without any technology. But would they do it with a common farm girl on board as well, I think not. And the paparazzi wouldn't leave Ginger alone long enough to go to the bathroom let alone a 3 hour tour. Technology not withstanding, it couldn't happen today because the classes are too far apart. And If it did they would all be rescued except Gilligan, he wouldn't last a week in this day and age. Pity the Skipper when they are rescued, he'll be sued for so much his descedants 10 generations later would still be in debt, he's better off staying on the island.

  18. The actual question at hand is whether or not there are any islands remaining on this planet that aren't on any map or known to someone someplace.

I don't know the answer.  I do know that since you can use Google maps, enter your address and it will produce an actual PICTURE OF YOUR HOUSE (!), it's unlikely with that level of satellite surveillance that any islands are completely unknown.  So all people have to do is check everywhere when a boat goes missing.

On a related subject, don't you think it's weird that they were on that island for 15 years and not one child was born in all that time?

  19. Yes.
