Question:

Could I Die On A Ride?

i know it sounds like a silly question but my friend has planned a trip to blackpool next week and i don't want to say no because i have a fear of rides. i don't usually go to theme parks and when i do, i go on the rides because everyone just hypes each other up and i enjoy the adrenaline rush before getting on it.

however once it starts going...i regret it badly! when it gets to the stage where your heart feels like it stops beating, i keep thinking i am going to die and i get myself into a state!

can your heart actually stop beating while you're on a ride and what are the chances of it resulting to death?

my heart aches and i can't breathe on a ride....is this normal? im only 20 and i don't have any sort of heart condition.

i haven't been on many rides but the rides that i have been on where really big, fast and scary!

please help...thanks x

  1. The risk is low but there have been a few incidents in the past few years where young child had undetected heart problems and these rides brought it out, and they died at the theme park. If you are this nervous, your heart is beating fast, and you can make yourself sick, I would stay off the scary rides...no reason to put yourself at risk.

  2. Most parks suggest if you suffer from extreme anxiety attacks or nervous ness then you shouldn't get on the rides..It will make things complicated ya dig...

  3. If you have a heart condition, it's recommended that you shouldn't ride high thrill rides.

But from what it seems, you don't have one -- it's just severe nervousness due to a common fear.

Look, you can die from doing ANYTHING; eating something, taking medicine, swimming... sometimes it's unlikely but it does happen. Rollercoasters are constantly checked for safety, and although sometimes the rare accident happens, you're more likely to be struck by lightning or killed by a shark (and even those are rare).

Have fun, take a breath, and relax. That's the whole point of a coaster!

    Good luck!

  4. It sounds as though you are having a mild panic attack, you won't die unless you have acute heart problems you will just experience great discomfort. Your head will tell you that you will die through sheer fright. Either go on the ride, breathe deeply and try to distract yourself. When the ride starts close your eyes it won't last long.

Alternatively, tell your friends that you just can't manage the rides.

  5. baby you need to ride on me and ill make your heart beat...!!

lol sorry its late and im bored of all the random questions that are being posted tonight as i am new to this..!!

very unlikely that you can die on a ride if you do not have a heart condition...its the adrenaline rush that makes you feel scared and dizzzy, thats the fear you need to overcome, once you get on a few rides you'll be cured hopefully!!

enjoy your fun, hope you dont die!!

  6. If you're not comfortable with going on rides, don't :) it's your life.

But think about how many rides there are in the world, and how many times they go a day? And there are no accidents and if there is then normally the person is at fault not the ride.  They are so safe, I promise you.

Look at health & safety in the UK it's gone mad over the tinest little things, and even if rides were putting anyones life at risk they would shut them down, and they haven't.

I used to hate rides but now I'm first in the line :P

  7. Could you die of fear?  You're young, and I will assume you're healthy, so no probably not.

Could the ride have a failure?  Pretty unlikely, but obviously it has happened on rare occasions.

If you know you aren't going to enjoy some of the rides, but you enjoy the company, you could eat the cost of the ticket in order to tag along and just not get on the rides you don't like.

edit: regarding the number of roller coaster fatalities - not sure where missing foot got the idea they are 100% safe, but the linked website begs to differ.  Nevertheless, fatalities are rare.

  8. Aren't rides meant to be scary? Enjoy yourself.

  9. Can your heart actually stop beating while you're on a ride

Yes of course the same as it can stop any other moment.

But the reason that you get these heart beatings and other feelings, when you are young and healthy, is originated by the fact that you are cramping up your body and stop breathing.

Next time you take a ride do 2 things: sing a song and tighten and then relax your muscles in the rhythm of the song. Especially your muscles in the neck and throat area. In tightening the muscles in your neck area you restrict the flow of the blood to your brains and that makes you get in a state as you describe it. So sing and relax, and laugh as hard as possible directly afterwards that is the secret.
