would regular towels work as rat bedding? Then once they are soiled i could switch the towel out and wash the other one in the washer?

Ive got some towels that are in bad shape so i could use those.

Is this a good idea?

  1. No bad idea

  2. Sure! :} That's what I use, along with fleece blankets. If your rats are litter-trained, it's really a cinch to clean up. You can clip them to the cage with binder clips or velcro.

    Here's my cage..

EDIT: Nicole does have a point. My rats are not really chewers, which is why I can use towels, but if your rats are you definitely should get only fleece.

  3. that is a great idea i think your rat will like it too :)

  4. i think it is a good idea, i do that with my hamsters all the time. i know they are totally different animals but they are closely related. all they do is chew the towel in the spot where they sleep.

  5. Unlike the others, I would have to disagree.  If your rat ingested any of the material (e.g. a loose thread) it could cause him numerous health issues either in his stomach, intestines, or bowel.  It's not normally a good idea for them to have any cloth in their cage other than fleece.  Fleece has no threads and is thus safe, but anything should be removed if it is chewed up.

Also, your rat may just gather up the towels in a corner and make a nest with them and then just pee on the surface of your cage-- defeating the purpose entirely.

You could just put litter in the litter box and wipe up urine with a wet cloth.  That and sweep up the turds with a dust pan.  That's what I do with my chinchilla.  (:

  6. If they are prone to tear things up, may not have a towel left, but I don't see it being a bad idea.
