Question:

Could I be having an early miscarriage or is my body just being weird?

My husband and I didn't use condoms when we first got together because I was on the Depo shot for 6 months. But when we were married almost two years ago we started trying to get pregnant and stopped using any kind of contraception.

I really don't keep up with my period, but I've noticed that they are very, very irregular lately. The month before last, I started on the 2nd. Last month, it was the 7th. Now, this month I just started today on the 16th. Why do they keep getting later and later?

Plus, even though I started my period on the 16th, I had severe cramps a few times every day since around the 5th, which is unusual for me because I usually don't cramp until I am actually bleeding. I couldn't even sleep at night and had to take painkillers. My b*****s are sore as usual, but oddly, my nipples are swollen and red and tender, too, which has never happened before. And I don't seem to be bleeding very much at all, and most of it is brownish. It's just cramping A LOT. What is going on with my body???

And while I'm at it, I've heard rumors of the Depo shot making women infertile. Does anyone know anything about that?

  1. I would take a pregnancy test.  You might just be having implantion bleeding.  Mild cramping in early pregnancy is normal.

  2. It is important to realize the women's body is on a 28 day cycle (same as the moon) not a 30 day cycle.  so because you began one month on the 2nd doesn't mean you will begin the next month on the 2nd.  The term irregular means being off by 6 weeks or so, not 6 days.

while pregnant the body does cramp along with a bunch of other symptoms.  but it is also important to note that as the woman's body gets older menstration changes as well.  when you may used to cramp all the time as a young teen, perhaps now as an adult you don't cramp at all....or vice versa.  Some things stay the same some things don't.  It's hard to give advice on this very fact.

if you're b*****s and nipples expressly are tender, there is a very good possibility you are pregnant.  I would plan a visit to the doctor's office and see if they had any further insight.

And yes, I have heard the Depo shot has a chance of changing the woman's body chemistry.  Most of what I have heard is that it gets the body used to 2 or 4 periods a year instead of 12 or 13.  Again seek medical advice about this topic as I am not a doctor or scientist with charts and facts and such crammed in my brain.  (PS I don't have a medical disclaimer either)

  3. I don't know anything about the Depo shot however I do know that 85% of miscarriages happen before a woman even know she is pregnant. These miscarriages typically happen around the time the woman's period is due so most times they go unnoticed. The only way to know for sure is to get a blood test to see if HCG is in your system. A pregnancy may or may not work and since they detect the hormone at 25 a blood test can tell you more accurately if you were indeed pregnant. Good luck.
