Question:

Could I be held on a 5150 if I mention thoughts of suicide?

I have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and have been stable on meds for over 1 year.

I am adjusting my meds due to life circumstances and am beginning to notice significant thoughts of suicide. I do not want to commit suicide, I realize these thoughts as a symptom, but I am concerned about mentioning it to my psych

I want to tell him so that we can adjust medications, but I cannot afford (nor do I feel I need) 5150.

Should I tell him (that is, will I be held if I do tell him), or should I just mention other symptoms and wait until it goes away?

  1. Tell him - the fact that you recognize it and want to fix it shows that you are thinking clearly.

  2. Yeah, that happened to me.

  3. i don't know your age - maybe a good friend or family member can help

but read on curezone.com there are testimonials, success stories of bipolar people

there are natural treatments, so please do not think of suicide

you can have a great life and be symptom free

also on alternativementalhealth.com - very good real life stories of people who got better

a good book to read ' please do not label my child' not only for children - very helpful book - i'm reading it the 3rd time, its so good, maybe you can get it at the library

let me know how you are doing

  4. My father is Bipolar, when he gets angry he often shouts out threats to 'string himself up' however he dosnt want to- when he cools down he apologizes.

Being Bipolar, or having depression, thoughts of suicide are common. as far fetch'd as it sounds its true- so yes, you can go ahead and speak your mind to your psych

  5. You can tell him about the thoughts and just be sure to mention that you have no plans and will not do anything to hurt or kill yourself.  As long as you can guarantee your own safety and have a plan in place if that changes, you should not be committed.  You should always be brutally honest with your providers, especially the psychiatrist.

Also, don't mention that you can't afford a hospital stay, just say that you don't need one.

  6. Try to stop taking the pills or get a boyfriend if you don't have one. Take out the focus of stress in your life.

  7. just tell him

  8. Tell him everything.  Your psych knows that meds can have side-effects that include thoughts of suicide.  He likely will just change your meds.  Don't wait to tell him and hope it will go away.

Bi-polar disorder is difficult and sometimes it takes a lot of changes before you get the meds that will do the best for you.  Hang in there.  Okay?

  9. Yep, you'll be held involuntarily for 72 hours.  Nice eh?  Do you tell him? -- Well, clearly the choice is yours alone to make.

    Good luck!

  10. Some pills can cause you to feel suicidal. I was going to go onto depressants and one of the symptoms was "could feel suicidal" which caused me me not to take them. I personally would take it up with your doctor to change the pills.
