Question:

Could I become a surfer?

I've always wanted to surf, but I've never done it before. I'm 15, and I think I'm to old to start because people usually start sports in early childhood. Do people who are beginers in surfing get made fun of because they are just a beginer by the other surfers? Do you have to take surf lessons to learn how to surf or can you just grab a board and try teaching yourself?

  1. You should never be too old to start a hobby as long as you're physically up to it. I'm 22 and thinking about taking a lesson in the area. It's like $150 for two 3 hr lessons on sat and sunday.

I recommend taking a quick lesson, or just hang out at the beach, meet some surfers and getting advice.

  2. dude your never too old to start surfing, most surfers won't make fun of you, they might help you but theres always those jerks that never let you get a wave.

You can always do it yourself( i did) but surf lessons wont hurt, they might be expensive though.

  3. not if you don't try

  4. Don't ever think you are "too old" to do anything. Surfers for the most part are a very laid back group. As long as you stick to the rules of surf etiquette: http://www.surfline.com/surfology/surfol...

nobody should hassle you. Of course some places are more territorial than others, so check with someone who surfs about the beaches near you. Definitely take at least one lesson to learn the basics of surfing, and have a blast!

  5. Go for it!!! If you are a beginner, learn the surfing "rules" ie don't drop in on anyone or get in other people's way. This will make sure you don't get made fun of. You can teach yourself how to surf, although lessons do make it easier as they teach you about the ocean (rips, sets etc). It does help to learn off someone elses experience. But whatever you want to do. If you know anyone who surfs well, go out with them. They'll give you plenty of advice and help, and are better value than a lesson. Good luck.

  6. no, i never got made fun of. just have fun in the sport and that's all that matters. i taught myself how to surf, since i'd rather buy a board and have my friend teach me than pay a lot more for just one lesson. :) i think it's more fun, but yet more dangerous (trust me) to teach yourself. i hope you're a good swimmer and know the ocean well, because you;ll need that.

  7. no i started surfing last year when i was 15 i dont even live near a beach! no i havnt got made fun of at all in fact most people thought it was pretty cool since i was the only person in out school to surf! one peice of advice tho. sont make out that your better then you attually are because after i started theres this girl who like copys me all the time, and she started and was like acting like she was a pro cos she bought a board and when i went with her she couldnt even stand up! and everyone just laffed and thought she was a r****d! but anywho id recommend getting lessons then hire a board for like a season then go buy one, good luck :)

  8. hey i wish i started when i was 15, i didn't start till i was 21 and that was all good. Its hard at first but it doesnt matter cause its so much fun. Lessons may be helpful but are by no means necesary. What i do reccomend is that you find suitable conditions, about knee to waist high and breaking softly over sand. And also get some advice on getting the right kind of board, it could be worth renting one to start out but you definately want to start on something big to get the basics down. Oh yeah and being able to swim alright in the waves helps. But yeah go for it get in there. youll love it

  9. no wayyy you wont get payed out

im 15 too, but im not learning i guess so that doesnt help.

just make sure your a good swimmer and get a mate to teach you!
