Question:

Could I damage my car when trying to install a new stereo?

I have a 93 Neon & was just given a Sony mp3 cd player. I was thinking of installing it myself and read the specs on the player as well as general info with how to install the stereo. Now before I open my dash up to do this lol, I'm just wondering if it's safe for someone with no experience (but who isn't a bad tinkerer) to try or not.

Do the wires connected to your stereo system run the risk of damaging anything else in the car? I don't have the money to pay someone to do it and it doesn't appear that complicated but I wouldn't want to cause myself more problems by shorting out the system.

Appreciate some advice :)

  1. If you understand the basics of simple electric circuits and you know how to wire home stereo, you should do fine.

I was installing radios when I was just 19 and I never seen the back of a car stereo.  Just know that you can easily short out the whole car electronics if you are not careful.

    Good Luck...

  2. you can.... i learned after being dumb and paying for an install

biggest thing is that when your hooking up the wire harness to your stock wires at the back of your stereo.....make sure you connect the ground wire first that way if you accidentally connect a wrong wire nothing will short out

after that just match up the wires. each wire is labeled in tiny writing so just match up all the wires, strip the plastic covering off of the wires and twist them together then put a cap on each set of connected wires to finish that

after you have connected all of the wires just connect the wire harness to the back of your deck and find your connection for the antenna and plug it in too

just make sure you but the proper cd player install kit for your car

  3. If you buy a wiring harness, radio kit and solder (or crimp) the wires together It should be fairly easy (color to color)/ The real problem you are going to have is taking the car apart. I've had neons parts break like they were held together with tape.
