I am selling my old car. A 16 year old boy is going to buy it and his mother wants the car put in his name. What happens if he doesn't get insurance and gets in an accident or something?? Could that come back on me since i sold the car to a minor? I live in Ohio if that helps.

  1. no!

if he doesn't have any insurance then he will have to pay the price.

since it will be in his name, his the one gonna get the trouble, not you.

  2. I don't think there's anything wrong with selling a car to someone who is 16 years old.

Maybe your best bet on that would just be to go through the process, and if a 16-year-old legally can't purchase a car, they'll catch that detail at the BMV when he goes to register it.  In that case, maybe you can suggest to have his mom use her name on the title--then you can still sell the car.

Here is the link to Ohio's official BMV (bureau of motor vehicles) page:

    http://www.bmv.ohio.gov/

I'm sure you could contact someone there (even anonymously, if that's a concern) about this question.

If he doesn't have insurance, that's his problem, not yours.  It doesn't make sense to me that it could come back to haunt you, so I think you'll be okay.

I found this, too.  It's a wiki answers thing, but it doesn't have an answer yet:

    Good luck!

  3. who cares you get money !

    xD

  4. you cant in trouble  for that you sold it to him you should even care if he get in a crash its  his car why would you care

  5. You wont get in any trouble because minors can buy/sell cars from people even if they dont even drive (fixing it up or something) but when they want to drive it they have to have insurance. If not, then it's their and their parents problem.

  6. YOu need a minor consent form

    Q1

I'm 17 years old and I want to purchase a vehicle in Ohio.  How is that handled?

    A16:

Per House Bill 68 a dealer or a clerk of court can witness a minor consent form. The forms are available at the Title Office.

  7. No, sell it to them.  You won't get into any trouble.

  8. no u cant get in trouble, once the car belongs to him you have nothing to do with it, tell him he needs insurance for it, if he doesnt agree then not your problem, the minor knows he couldnt drive underage and all you did is sell the car not forcing him to drive it, better?

  9. no. i don't think it'll come back to haunt you. It's his car now. You could sell it to a three year old. I mean, the 16 year old kid could've gaven it to his mother for a present. So you see, you can always play that excuse. If you have any problems with it than that boy and the cops can come to me! HA HA HA!

  10. Its absolutely fine if you sell your car to a minor. But I will suggest you to consult with an insurance executive. Because he/she can tell you the best alternatives. After all you are selling your car and you need to know about the drawbacks which could affect you after selling the car. You can speak to your insurance company and tell them you are selling your car to a boy who is 16 years old, and they can assist you better.

  11. You cant get in trouble for that...Its his problem if he wont get car insurance.

  12. If the car isn't under your name when the accident happens then it's not your problem in the least. It doesn't matter all that much that he's a minor.

  13. that has nothing to do with you...once you sell the car its sold, and its up to the boy to insure his vehicle and drive legally...it would not be your fault at all...

  14. No, at 16 years of age he is legally allowed to own property. What he does with it is his own business. Once you sign the asset over to him in exchange for monetary values you are completely void of any liability.

  15. No you won't. Send V5 form off and it will be in his name. If you don't have one, then call the DVLA up and get it

  16. Since you sold it, it's in his hands now, that car is now his responsibility don't worry about it.

  17. I'm pretty sure that once you sign away the title, the car is no longer your responsibility. You should check with the DMV to make sure, though.

  18. not sure about that, but you might want to call the police department and ask them or the License Bureau.

  19. If it's legal for a 16 year old to drive a car then it shouldn't come back to you.

  20. The boys mother will quickly discover that a 16-yo cannot buy insurance and probably cannot title the car in his name. If she wants him to have the car she will have to buy it and insure it.

You could potentially have trouble if the car is not titled in someone else's name. You could probably cover yourself by notifying the state titling agency that you sold the car. They will want the name, address, etc of the person you sold it to.

    Good Luck

  21. Once you sell the car and the title is no longer in your name the car is no longer your responsibility, that is on the individual that has ownership of the car and if he doesn't get any insurance on it...that is his problem not yours.  No longer your problem.

  22. i don't believe so because the title is going to him. but if your really cautious about it look up the dmv in your state to see what the guide lines are.

  23. no, but he could stop paying you and keep the car if he wants, since a contract is not binding on a minor in most states. Get his Mom to co-sign.

  24. buyer beware

"I never new that " thats all you have to say

as they say in Ohio "play Dumb"

  25. tell him to give the money to his mom so he pays for it but it looks like his mom did that way nothing can happen to you!

  26. A simple call to motor vehicle should answer your question.  You should go to motor vehicle with the boy to transfer the title...once the title is not in your name, I don;t see how you can be responsible for it.  but call motor vehicle to be sure.

  27. no, if he has the title in his name its his responsibility

  28. Absolutely not, you can own a car at any age but you have to be the right age to DRIVE it. He clearly has parental consent and you are not responsible for anything which happens after the vehicle leaves your hands.

  29. Do not do it.  He is a minor, therefor any contract he enters with you is VOID in the laws eyes.  Sell it to her, and what she does after that is her business...and you will have nothing to do with it legally.  COVER YOUR BUTT!!!!

  30. Get the kid to give his money to his mom, and get the mom to pay for it. That way she paid for the car. Also I believe that once he gets the car it's his responsibility to have insurance.

  31. Minor Consent Form for State of Ohio:

    Use it.
