Question:

Could I get into a good college?

I'm a sophomore in high school with an approximate GPA of 3.9 and I have two extracurriculars so far.

My high school requires 26 credits for graduation, and I'll most likely graduate with 28-29 credits.

My teachers are always stressing how tough it is to get accepted to many colleges. I'd like to attend a university with a high status (most likely not an Ivy League). Is it possible for me to do so?

  1. With that GPA, you'll probably have very little trouble getting INTO a good college.  The hard part is going to be getting money to attend - unless your parents are rich, you need to start looking for scholarships so you don't graduate with piles of debt.  Those are much more competitive - you need to participate activities (but only those that interest you, don't attend Pep Club meetings just to list in on applications), high exam scores, and some good essay writing skills.  The first answer did a good job of summarizing.

  2. It is DEFINITELY possible for you to get into a great college! :) So long as you maintain your grades and stay involved in your extracurriculars, you'll have no problem with the academic aspect of getting in.

What your teachers are probably referring to are the admissions essay and teacher recommendations. You will also need to take either the SAT or ACT, and probably even a couple of SAT Subject Tests. Just study and do your best on these -- you can take them over (it doesn't hurt your chances of getting in, but it does kind of suck financially). :P

Also, scheduling an interview at your college has the potential to do wonders -- they have a face to match with the name and accomplishments, and makes you that much more memorable. :)

    Good luck!

  3. Why are you asking this question when the answer is so obvious?  You have a 3.9 -- you have to know that is a good GPA and that if you keep doing this well you will get into a good college.

  4. Provided you get a decent SAT / ACT score getting in to an ivy league school for you will be competitive not impossible. Take some time to review admission policies for the schools you are interested in attending. Then ignore what your teacher is saying I suspect their message is meant for the 'slackers' who believe they can 'slide by' and be accepted to an university. The issue for you most likely will not be can you be admitted but to what school. Harder you work in your senior year and if you get good SAT scores (e.g. around 2200 - 2400) or an ACT score around 33 then an Ivy League school is quite possible, I believe. Even if you do not get those high scores a 3.9 GPA with average test scores will get you into most universities.

  5. Youre on your way.

You just need to get a little more savvy on the whole college portfolio

Grades and GPA (plus the rigor of your course load)

    SAT/ACT scores

Extracirriculars (you need to have activities that really mean something to you, that youve been involved with for a long time, and that are challenging)

    Awards and recognitions

Once you can put this together you should start looking for colleges that suit you. Not everyone is cut out for an Ivy League but you sound like you might be! You are on track and even early! Good for you Hope this helps a bit
