well it depends on if you have children...................

if you have children then they should definitely be involved.... so if they are old enough include them and ask their opinion....

you must always put a young photo in the paper.... when i turned 40.. my husband and kids had decorated my car to let everyone know my age.......... my husband told a co-worker and that co-worker told everyone else at work.............. there were even signs posted on my way to work.....my children gave me a day at the spa.... and books that i enjoyed reading (for my time)..... they had this beautiful cake for me and balloons.... my hubby gave me a certificate to my favorite store........... it was all wonderful...........

Okay.. I don't know how much of a sense of humor your wife has, but here's a HILARIOUS idea -- if my husband did this for me on my 40th birthday, I'd laugh for hours!!  My mother did this to my step father YEARS ago, but I still remember it clearly!

While my Mom's husband was sleeping, she blew up 40 BLACK balloons.  Then, she also purchased a mylar balloon with a picture of the Grim Reaper on it that said "Happy Birthday.. See You Soon!" on it.  While he was still asleep, she let all the balloons loose in the room so that when he woke up, the room was filled with 40 black floating balloons and the grim reaper.

LOL it was SOOOO funny.

As far as sweet things, anyway.. just give her something you know she'd enjoy. :)

wow! 40 is cute that you are asking for ideas! why you don't go out to dinner with her and gift her something she likes! it doesn't have to be expensive but sentimental! something sweet! good luck and happy b-day 2 ur wife! enjoy it

Well here are some things that have been done in my family for significant birthdays.

filled the car with black balloons

sent a childhood picture of the person to the local newspaper with "Lordy, Lordy look who's 40"

Tacked flyers up around the neighborhood announcing the birthday

My daughter invited all my friends and family to meet at a nice restaurant to surprise me on my 40th.

Sent 40 red roses to her place of work.

i'm only 23 but i've always thought it would be funny to come home from work one day and see 40 pink flamingos or something in my front lawn!

maybe get her a gift certificate to a spa to get a facial and her nails done.  it'll make her feel beautiful!  i'm sure she is already beautiful but i know a lot of women tend to feel crappy on their birthdays because they think they are growing into an old hag!

or get her something she would never buy for herself!

Take her  to a bed  and breakfast do some wine tasting and have really good s*x where you do everything she love and make sure  you only worry about pleasing and taking care of her need.  If you can't get  away and you have kids send them to a friends house or relatives house and do all this at home. turn your bathroom into a spa, get some nice   things at bath and body.  buy her a cute  s**y outfit and get her Flowers and wine if you can cook make her a nice dinner or maybe in the am a great breakfast in bed.
