Question:

Could I have blown a curcuit breaker?

I had an older portible A/C plugged into the same outlet as my washing machine. Needless to say, the washing machine and A/C turned off. Went to the breaker box but didn't find a tripped curcuit. Now the hot water heater (next to the washing machine) isn't putting out hot water and the electrical outlet still isn't working. I tried resetting all the breakers but still nothing. Do I need to replace the curcuit breaker? Is this something I need to leave to the professionals?

  1. If u have more than 1 circuit out...U might have a blowned fuse coming to the house.  Another thing is, u don't know how to reset breaker fuses.  U need to call the power company and let them know the situation and they will send a service person to evaulate.  Most likely, they will reset the breakers or climb up to the poles to trouble shoot the problem.  They can check if 1 of the legs is out.  I have a feeling it's 1 of the legs and the service is free.

  2. Sounds like someone ran another breaker-box near the water heater and washer / dryer, check around that area to see if you can locate a switchbox near them!!!!

Try plugging portable A/C into a differant outlet!!! see if it runs.... if so then you may need to call prvious owner and ask where the fuse box is for the washer and stuff if you can not locate it!!!

  3. Call a qualified professional electrician. There are too many possible causes to what you describe.  I suspect that you have one leg out in the sub and it is an easy fix but it could be many other possible problems.  You may want to consider a complte overhaul of the system since one problem is an indicator that there is something wrong. The next problem may be a panel fire.

  4. No, No ,NO.

FIRST, check to see if you have a Ground Fault Isolator (GFI) outlet.

It is one of the outlets with two funny buttons in themiddle.

Unplug the washer/AC etc. Find ALL the GFI-s in your house and push the test then reset buttons.

  5. If your water heater stopped working the main breaker may be bad or you have half the panel out. Your panel is made up of 2 110 volt sides and if one side is out the water heater is only working on 110 not 220. Call your electrical supplier
