Question:

Could I make the team?

I'm going to try out for my school's jv volleyball team and I really want to make the cut. Physically, I know how to bump, set, serve underhand and upperhand, and dive but I can't spike properly. I know most of the rules. Do I know enough to make the team?

  1. yeah, probably. when i went out for my skools team, i couldnt spike "properly," but i could get it down there. im tall, which helps too. i made the cut, and i learned how, so maybe you should make it known that u are willing to learn!!! hope this helped and GOOD LUCK!!!

  2. I'm a coach and I'll tell you a few of my favourite player qualities:

    -Calls the ball

-Knows rotations and defensive positions...all of them!

    -Pays attention

    -Helps teammates

    -Asks questions

-Actually tries to do what the coach says (be careful though, sometimes when changing something it can get worse before it gets better. Don't get discouraged, keep trying and it'll come).

-Calls the ball...it's worth saying twice!

    -Never gives up

These are some things that set players apart. Only after these, do I look at skill. If you have a coach that actually cares about development, they should look at these also.

    Good Luck!

  3. I would like to add something to the answer of bigA.  Call the ball.  Just kidding.  Actually, I would add call the ball LOUDLY.

And when the coach corrects you, your answer is "thank you, I will work on that" and mean it.  Do not roll your eyes or give the coach any reason to doubt you.

Good luck.  You do sound like you have the tools necessary.  If you do the above answers, you should make the team.

  4. luckily for you there are specialized positions in volleyball you sound like you should focus on the back row becoming a defensive specialist, libero, or even a setter. since hitting is your weakest attribute to the game keep trying to hit but focus your skills on passing perfect to the setters spot serving to all positions (1-6) and if you feel like trying to increase your range ask your coach to try you as a setter it will not hurt you to learn how to set a decent ball. who know you might be need to step in every once in a while. being a versatile player is a great contribution to any team.

  5. out of the 46 girls who tried out only 15 made it including me~~~~besides yo skills be sure to get to know your coach b/c coaches want to have a good healthy relationship with their players and be positie that the player will have a good sportsmanship. The also want to make sure that if you are on the team they will be able to teach you easy!!! Good luck

  6. You sound like you could. However, I knew how to do all of that and I still didn't make the JV team. You deffinetly need to know how to correctly aproach for a spike...and you need to be physically fit.. at my try-outs there was a whole lot of running.

    Good luck!

  7. If you just believe in yourself you can do anything. Go try out. Just make the best of it. Pump up your party.

  8. when i tried out for the volleyball team at my school, i had never played before in my life. i couldnt even serve overhand. but i still made it. i think if you try your best and have a good attitude at practice then you will have a greater chance at tryouts. good luck!!

  9. of course!!! never think on the negative side. have hope in yourself. you already know the basics dont worry i GUARRANTEE you'll make the team. if you need some more help, you could try going to some camps or watching the world series on televisions. maybe then by looking at some of the star players like Winter from Canada then you could improve on your shots and make them more accurate!

P.S. hope you make the team!!!! :)

  10. yes you do

  11. i think you should learn all the rule first... but other then that sure

  12. I believe you have got to know everything you should know, and you simply need a little more practice so that you can gain confidence when showing up at the try-out.

Try find a local open gym no matter which level they are playing. Watch those experienced players play, pay your attention to their footwork and how/when they call the ball. Step up and join one of those teams that have nice players who like to give you a little advice and could "tolerate" your minor mistakes...

You learn by making mistakes, but you only want to play for a team that understands you, and can cover you.

  13. . resarch the rules. and you'll be fine

  14. sure, unless there is some one better than you. I think you got what it takes. Although if you can't spike properly you should probaly learn how to.

    good luck.

  15. if you want to be back row yes, and possibly front row im sure none of the other girls are that great either, just listen to what the coaches tell you, go to all the open gyms that you can and make sure the coaches know that your committed

  16. I think you do have a good chance of making it but it will be a challenge. At least you have the basics down but not all players do spike in a game...you can be defense or a setter, and in time, you will get better at spiking the ball...just make sure to try your hardest at tryouts since coaches want to see players who want to play not just cuz they think it will be fun to try out
