Ok so lets say for years you have been planning on going to the USA for Grad school. You did your research are taking prep courses for the GRE and working hard in school. In the past your uncle (who pays for your tuition) has said he'd pay for Grad school any time. But when you finally talk to him about where you would like to go he says he's only willing to pay the school you are in now (which is in Canada). All of a sudden all that school effort seems meaningless and same for GRE. You feel really upset because you really wanted to go to the US and now you're stuck in the same place two more years (if you get in). So What would you do in my place? Would you take his offer and suck it up for another two years or would you seek ways to go where you wanted (even though your own parents can't afford it and you're just an average student)?

  1. The selfishness of your question only prompts me to reply that you MUST be referring to grade school, not grad school.

  2. Stay where you are.  Trying to go out on your own will cause you much misery.  Be glad your uncle is willing to do as much as he is.

  3. Are you able to live for free (with family in Canada)?  Vs. if you lived in the states you have to pay rent?  There is a cost difference there.  Its two years but it may make a big difference in your finances now and later on.

That said, you should make a list of the benefits of going to the states and present it to your uncle (example - School in the US is better known, employment rate when you graduate is % higher vs % in Canada)

Another option is to get student loans??

Hope this helps - good luck

  4. Decide what is most important to you, then go for it.  If you don't take your uncle's offer, you'll have to get a job to support yourself.  That makes finding time to study even harder.

Have you asked your uncle if he'd pay the same as he's paying for the current school, if you'd make the rest up working so you can go to the school of your choice?

I wish I could have been "stuck" with someone else paying my tuition when I was in college.  Seriously, you're very lucky on that one.  I hope you've kissed your uncle's...feet.
