Question:

Could I really be....?

Hello all. I'm 24 years old. I'm actually on the pill and have been since I was 16. Well, I have been with my boyfriend for 4 years now and we also live together. I am sort of stressing out because I am currently 4 days late from starting my period. I am always on time, this is the first time it's ever been this late. I have absolutely no signs of starting either (no cramps or spotting). I have been feeling really woozy and nauseous but only late at night, so, I don't think it's morning sickness and I have been really, really moody like b*tchy. I took a pregnancy test last night and it came out negative. Could there be a chance that I really am pregnant and a test hasn't detected it yet or could there be any other reason why I am late? Any advice would be great.

Thanks.

  1. It is too soon for a pregnancy test to tell you whether or not you really are pregnant.

It is possible that you are, especially if you misssed some pills.  It's not highly likely, but birth control is not 100% guarantee.  Did you use a condom?  If you did, I doubt you're pregnant.

It's really hard to tell if you're pregnant at this stage.  Some of the early warnings are short headaches, mood swings, spotting (ironically, so it's hard to decipher between period and pregnancy) and some nausea.  80% of women or so do experience nausea even without vomiting at the beginning of a pregnancy.

If your period doesn't come, I reccomend going to the doc because he'll tell you for sure.  I think a pregnancy test can't accurately tell you for several weeks.

But, look on the bright side - you're 24.  If you were pregnant, that wouldn't be so bad.  You're in a stable relationship, and you're old enough to have a baby, even though it may not be desired.

If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't stress out too much.  I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years, and the only reason why I would be upset to be pregnant is because I am too young (I'm 19) so you've got a good 5 years on me =P

    Anyways, good luck finding out!

  2. You could be pregnant - no method of birth control is 100% effective. But it's not likely.

Many women, even those with regular cycles, can be late or even miss a period, without being pregnant.

The pregnancy test box or insert will say how long after your missed period it is effective. It used to be two weeks, but now they have early pregnancy tests that can work much sooner. Wait a few days and take it again.

  3. dont worry, that bloody mess will show up sooner than u think!

  4. sorry leady, but  nature we can't deceive

  5. stress can stop it, dieting extremes can stop you too

take another test in 2 days - they are 99% accurate- stop stressing!

  6. First of all, don't stress yourself out over being four days late.  Stress will just prolong your from getting your period.  Your body is going to change in hormones over the next few years.  Your periods may be adjusting to those changes.  If your test came out negative, there is a good chance that you are not pregnant.  If you are worried about it and need extra reassurance, go to your doctor and request a blood test for confirmation.  Personally, I would give it 7 days and test again.

Plus, you have to take into consideration how many things can change your cycle.  Stress, eating habits, exercise, etc. can all make changes to when your period occurs.  Relax, get plenty of rest, and don't take your bad moods out on your boyfriend and you'll be just fine. ;)

  7. Urine pregnancy tests don't work for everyone.  As an ER nurse I had a woman who was 3 months pregnant and her urine test was neg.  A blood test will show for sure.  If you don't have health insurance your local health dept. will do one for free.  Also just because your period is late doesn't mean your pregnant.  Factors like stress, weight loss or weight gain just to name a few can make your period irregular.  Also just because its called morning sickness doesn't mean it just happens in the morning.  It can happen anytime of the day or night.  Hang in there and get that blood test done ASAP.  If your pregnant you need prenatal vitamins..especially in the first trimester of pregnancy where the baby's developing the most.  Folic acid in the prenatal vitamins is really good for the baby's brain development.

  8. If you have skipped a few pills here and there that could be to blame. I take the pill too, but if I miss a few then it throws off the cycle. Most likely the pregnancy test is right, they rarely read "not pregnany" if you are. Have you been losing weight recently? That could also be to blame. Go to the doc if it's too much later, or you skip it altogether.

  9. well when did you last have sexual intercorse? cause it may be so and the pregnancy test could be wrong. go to doctor and check.

  10. First, you should know that morning sickness, though called "morning" doesn't actually always happen in the morning hours - it can happen at any time during the day. Secondly, tests are capable of showing false negatives, but not false positives, because you may not have enough of the "pregnancy hormone" for the test to pick up on yet. However, since you are four days late I doubt this.

What I did in this situation was: I went ahead and made a doctor's appointment a couple of days into being late, but I made it for a few days later. That gives you a few more days to wait for Aunt Flo to come. If she does come, you can cancel your appointment, no problem. If not, you have the peace of mind knowing that you have an already scheduled appointment.

    Good luck, dear!

  11. No, if you already had a test of negative result specially when you used protection for having s*x.

  12. It's rare, but it can happen that you just miss a period while on the pill.  It could be too that the stress of worry is making your period later (so try not to worry too much!).

It's also rare, but it can happen that the pill fails -- even with "perfect" use -- and pregnancy occurs (the pill even under clinically perfect circumstances is only about 98.5% effective).

If you don't have your period by the time you start your next pack (and DO start your next pack!), take another test.  If it's negative AND  you skip your NEXT period as well, then make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible to find out what's what.
