If I were to get my BA in Sociology (with the intent to teach college after I get a PhD), could I teach elementary school as long as I had teach certification? I wouldn't have to teach sociology I would be happy just teaching elementary school while I worked on my masters.

  1. I'm pretty sure.  My mom majored in speech and got a master while teaching.

  2. No. You have to be "highly qualified" in the subjects you teach. Sociology wouldn't do it.

  3. Do a search for "state department of education" for your state. When you get to that site, search for "alternative certification." It a program where you can get teaching credentials with a degree in something other than education. I spoke to a woman who was doing an "alternative masters" in elementary ed, and she said the program took about 2 years. Each state has its own requirements, though.

    Best to you!

  4. Yes , it is distinctly possible , just remember that you must have an elementary certification with a specialy to teach them .

I hope this helps and good luck . God bless

  5. Only way to know for sure is to check with your state's department of education or state board of education.

My state (Ohio), for example, issues different licenses for elementary, middle childhood, and young adolescent.  You need one of the first two to teach in elementary.

  6. You need to check your state's website, but I'm pretty sure that you would need to add elementary certification to your resume.

That will be, at the minimum, a year's worth of study added, including a partial semester of student teaching.

You can probably get hired as a sub -- tough life -- no benefits, but that's about it.
