Could I use puff pastry instead of canned biscuits in this recipe?

INGREDIENTS

* 250 g all-purpose flour

* 100 g shortening

* 6 g salt

* 120 ml cold water

* 2 apples

* 65 g white sugar

* 1 g ground cinnamon

* 235 ml vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS

1. Peel and dice apples. Add sugar and cinnamon. Cook in a saucepan on low heat. Cook until soft, then mash with fork to form a thick applesauce.

2. Sift flour and salt together. Cut in the shortening. Add water and mix with fork.

3. Roll out to about 1/8 inch thick on a floured board. Cut with a large cookie cutter (4 inches in diameter).

4. In each round, place 1 heaping tablespoon fruit. Moisten edges with cold water, fold and press edge with a fork.

5. Heat oil in a large skillet on medium-high heat. Fry pies, a few at a time, 2 to 3 minutes on each side; cook until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.

I don't want to make the crust but I'm not sure if I can buy canned biscuits from Australia. Would I b able to use uff pastry instead?

If you have any other fried apple pie recipes that are like the apple pies you get from McDonalds plz tell me.

  1. Puff pastry would be wonderful with an apple filling, but it would be baked - not fried.  If you fry puff pastry, it won't puff!


  2. yes but you have to bake this instead of frying it.

    To turn pastries a deep golden-brown, brush tops with a mixture of 1 egg yolk and 1 teaspoon water just before baking. To add a special texture and flavor, sprinkle chopped nuts, seeds, ground spices or grated cheese on top.

    Always bake pastry shells in a preheated 400°F oven

    Bake shells about 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Use a fork to remove "top" and soft pastry underneath. Return shells to oven 3 to 5 minutes for extra crispness


  3. What are canned biscuits?

    I have never heard of that term in Australia.

    As for your recipe/request, no you couldn't use puff pastry in the recipe as that needs to be baked so if puffs.

    Looking at your recipe you appear to make a shortcrust type pastry which may be able to be fried.


  4. It should be ok. How about won ton wrappers from the asian shop ive seen them use on tv when making deserts. It fries really well and you dont have to cut them out too.
