Ok, so I am thinking of doing a 10k trail run this fourth of July weekend. I am 14, reasonably fit and have done some 5ks before (times around 24:30-25:00). BUT...I have only done them on the road...I think that trail running sounds like a lot more fun and interesting than just running on the road but I don't know if I could handle a 10k..I've never done on before. Any info about trail running, 10ks, and any advice at all would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

  1. Trail running is much more fun, but you may want to train on trails a little before you try racing.  Trail surfaces vary a lot. from well worn paths to rocky, root filled mud holes.  All are fun but they can be technically challenging.  Lots of stuff to trip on.  Whatever you do have fun.  Just don't run any faster than you feel safe.

  2. First, I think you can do it.

Have you ever run 10k as a training run?  Maybe go out and try one before the weekend.  Also, go out more slowly than you do in your 5k runs.  And if you want to walk during the race, go ahead.  Then start back up again.  I'm sometimes too proud or stubborn to do it, but it works.

Running trails is pretty cool.  Lots of green around.

Just remember, it's your first experience.  Enjoy it as a new thing.  You'll learn a lot, and it will widen your running experience.
