Could You Live Without a Car?

Because of the high cost of fuel and the economic downturn, many Americans have decided to give up their cars and live in a world of buses and trains. These people live in cities, where bus and subway transport are available. We could concentrate upon building up these methods of transport. Most European and Asian countries have fast-moving trains that handle their needs.

According to an article in New American Media, Americans own, on an average, 2.28 cars in each household Americans love their cars and often would rather lose their houses than their cars. Some compare this to a cowboy's love of his horse. They are not just vehicles, but can be status or comfort symbols.

The American car craze is blamed in part for the Illegal Alien crisis. Pictures of Illegals in cars, even without proper licensing, are sent home and spur even more border crossings.

Could you live without a car? Would you be willing to give up your vehicle and live with only bus or train transportation?

  1. I couldn't give up my car! no way would you see me on a bus!!!!

  2. I think if gas prices keep going up...and the hybrid hydrogen or electric cars aren't enough...People will just have to go back to horse and buggy,so don't worry about it...

  3. Yes...........................

I am using my bicycle 3 times a day and if this gas situation does not get under control, I will be using it 5 times a day, hey bike tires are cheaper plus its good exercise.........

  4. Ed Begley, Jr. uses a bicycle most of the time or walks.  He also has a hybrid vehicle.

While I am much more dependent on my car, I think his lifestyle is an inspiration.   I also walk short distances most of the time, combine trips, plan ahead, etc.

A new idea I like is that of short term car rentals, for an hour or so.  Some companies have started up in bigger cities with that concept.   People buy memberships and pay for the hours they use the car.  The company maintains it.  For those who do not need to use a car every day, it is a great idea.

  5. Currently for me to give up my car, I would have to find a different job. But yes. I would gladly alter my life to rid myself of the addiction to foreign oil.

  6. No, I could not live without a car because I have a very hectic schedule and need to get to certain places on time. I dont have time to wait for a bus or train, nor do I want to have to go by their schedules. Without my own car to just hop in, I would feel very trapped, frustrated, etc.
