Hi, I'm a fourteen year old kid. I'm watching the Beijing Olympics and thinking 'I wanna compete in them', but I don't know what I want to do. If I started a new sport, do you think it would be enough time to compete in the London 2012 Olympics?

  1. Ya... I think it possible. You just have to really want it, and set you mind to it, and you could totally to do. Find something that you like to do, and you need to start training, and just work your way up....

  2. "Of course. For example - guns."

    hahahahahahaha! That made me laugh.

You could do it, but you would have to throw away your social life and focus on basically nothing but your sport, if you want to do something high profile. Doesn't leave a whole lot of room for growing up, and you can often wear out your body very quickly. That's my opinion anyway.

  3. Try talking to your local sports club or coach to find out info about joining the olympics. Ive seen a lot of kids training for the olympics 2012 on tv in some clubs which i unfortunatly dont know.

  4. Depends on the sport. Forget gymnastics. Some of the Jamaican sprinters that are winning never even had international victories before this year. But the vast majority of atheletes have taken part in national and international level competitions for years.

  5. it will take ALOT of practice and hard work you have too be really into it if you are really into what your doing and you really wanna do it anything is possible

  6. Yes, Fencing is something that you can start right now and you can reach the National olympic team for London 2012.

  7. probably but you have to determine what sport as some like gymnastics usually they start very early, many 5/6 years of age.

  8. It depends on a lot of factors - you're not the only 14 yr old with this dream.

To be able to concentrate totally for 4 years, would require a lot of discipline and a lot of effort from yourself, and understanding parents.  To ease the effort, pick a sport you love - something you wouldn't mind missing weekends and early mornings for - and one where you have a certain amount of natural ability in, and a sport where there is a club/coaches near you.

  9. pick a sport that you have the right body type for and start training. if i was you i would aim for eight years away olympics. four wont be long enough, you have to train a h**l of a lot. I had a mate that just missed out on rowing at the olympics. He was training 3 to 5 hours a day 6 days a week. its bloody hard work. good luck

  10. yeah i think i want that too

  11. It would depend on the sport and your ability. some are born with it and some are not. Champions are born not made. I think if you have world class ability 4 years might be too soon for you. the next one after that in 2016 will be right on the market. You have to race internationally and be included in the national team for that. You have to produce times and performances. The more racing you do the better and there are qualiflying times for the games which is very hard to reach. You are to beat a lot of elete athetes to even to considered for selection. do not watch the games and say oh I want to be in them, things like that does not happen over night, It takes years and years to get there if you get there. Good luck

  12. If your good at sport and stay focus maybe

  13. Rebecca Romero of Great Britain won a silver medal in Athens four years ago in rowing.  Now, 4 years later she has won gold for cycling, a sport she only started 4 years ago.  Her first competitive cycling race was only 2 years ago.  So can you do it in 4 years?  You bet you can!  Something like BMX would be a good place to start - the British hopeful Shanaze Reade is only 19 years old and she is looking to win a gold in Beijing!

  14. it's possible but most probably a dream

  15. Of course. For example - guns. 10 metres.

  16. It is more than possible, but you really need to focus and work. there is no particular barrier, other than your own ability.
