Could a jet make a booming sound w/out crashing?

i was thinking about a sonic boom, but wouldn't that make everyone deaf who heard it? i heard a boom from a "jet" yesterday, (according to lots of people) just wondering if it was possible.

A sonic boom over land would be unusual due to speed regulations, albeit some hot shot might have decided to have some fun. They are incredibly loud, such that windows can break. A more typical situation is a compressor stall, sometimes they just occur seemingly at random, albeit it is rare. Much of the time, no damage results to the engines, and it will recover, but it sure serves to freak out the passengers.
