  1. The sun would rise very quickly in orbit so there wouldn't be much of a transition time where the sun was partially obscured.  I doubt it would take more than a few seconds to go from dark to full light.  The orbits aren't far enough out to see any of the sun except when it rises.  The Earth would completely block it so there wouldn't really be a partial eclipse of the sun.


  2. No. Unless the moon is visible, it's totally dark in the umbra. (Planetary and star light are negligible for this purpose)

    Yes. In the penumbra, only part of the sun is obscured, so the solar cells could generate some electricity.
