  1. If you mean like an RTS, then the only game I own that allows you to do that is Goblin Commander... but it only lets you have around 20-30 troops in an army...

For PC, there's Rise of Nations and Dawn of War that are excellent.

  2. I'm guessing you must mean Real Time Strategy, because no other game actually lets you lead and direct a whole army.

In that case, the best beloved rts game on ps2 is Kessen. Kessen 2 is a great followup. They are both in 3d, and real-time, and in Kessen 2 you can take control of the various commanders and fight alongside their soldiers like an action game.

Kessen is also a great history lesson, it's about the great battle of Sekigahara in 1600 (biggest battle in the world until Waterloo). The battle was fought between the legendary Ieyasu Tokugawa on one side, and his rival Mitsunari Ishida on the other, and was a classic example of a general detecting a trap, and deliberately springing the trap and gaining the initiative through surprise. Tokugawa is also the real-life Shogun that Lord Toranaga from the old miniseries was based on. Then you go through many other battles to finish off Lord Ishida, and after that you get to be Ishida and try to beat Tokugawa in a new series of what-if battles.

The next Kessen is in ancient China and is between a popular rebel named Liu Bei and a ruthless would-be emperor named Cao Cao. Again you are one side first then when you win you play the other side to see what the other result would have been.

The first Kessen is realistic, it has actual special weapons that were really used, like archer volleys, rifle barrages, cannonades. In the second Kessen each commander has a repertoire of magic abilities and counter-spells instead. Both make for excellent strategy.

  3. Dawn of War 2
