Could any one tell me the meaning of "to whom i answered".?

the original passage as follows:To whom I answered that divers men hold opinion that there was no such Arthur,and that all such books as been made of him be feigned and fables......

  1. It refers to the person I gave an answer to. The passage follows a question by the person to whom an answer was provided.


  2. It means you're addressing the person you answered. For example if you answered Fred (I don't know ;p)..."To whom" is a replacement for "to Fred". Hard to explain really.

  4. Some grammarians would consider that sentence, long as it is, a fragment, for the very reason that you find it confusing.  "Whom" evidently refers to a noun in the previous sentence, naming the person who made the statement that the writer answered.
