In the 50s, there were far less teams and the talent level on each team was extremely high. The Canadians of the 70s were more dominant than any team since. Could any team today beat either of them in a seven game series?

  1. No. but the closest would be Red Wings of today.

  2. Only if they shoot the puck in the air... those goalies had no or crappy masks... With equal equipment... NO

  3. The Edmonton Oilers in the 80's would destroy any team out there today.

The original six teams, like Montreal and Detroit, were very good in their time, but they didn't draw from the international talent pool.  There were very few Americans, and no Europeans in the league then.  Every player was from Manitoba or Quebec.

Edmonton was one of the first teams to exploit the possibility of getting players from other places, and they excelled at it.

  4. Not to sound like I have favorites but I think the 70's Canadiens would be easier to beat than the 50's Red Wings only because the league was watered down during the 70's too.

And don't forget that the Hab's won 5 Cups in a row back in the 50's.

As far as any team from today beating them. That's a great question. While the older players were more talented across the league, today's players - while spread thin among 30 teams - are faster and bigger.

If they could be matched up, I'm sure that there will be no sweeps as the pros and cons of teams from each era would sort of cancel each other out.

  5. No. The league is too watered down now.

  6. Potentially, as the style of play is more uptempo and harder

  7. no

  8. i could there *** on my own

  9. They could if they used machine guns

  10. Yes because the level of talent today is a lot higher. A 2nd Line AHL player today could probably have been a pretty successful NHL player back in the 50s. Everyone is more athletic now because of the more intense training and conditioning and all the sports supplements and c**p that players use today.
