Let's say there is a doubles match on Court X. The net that is used is the wider one. When the match is over, a singles match is played. The wider net that was used for the doubles match is used. Why? Do you get what I mean? I'm not very articulate.

  1. the net length is the not important what matter's are the lines of the court ... finish

  2. the main difference of the net for use in double vs single match is the height of the net at the singles (narrower) sidelines.

doubles: at the doubles (wider) sidelines, the height of the net should be 3 1/2 ft. at the singles (narrower) sidelines, it will gradually drop lower until it reaches 3 ft at the centerline.

singles: at the singles sidelines, the height of the net is 3 1/2 ft, so it is slightly higher than for doubles.

since the difference is not significant (do the maths yourself), sometimes it is acceptable for non ATP tournaments to use doubles net for singles match. hope it helps :)

  3. Probably to save time. The larger court is only used in doubles matches so the extra net length doesn't matter as the ball would be out of play in a singles match if it went over the inner court line.

  4. I think that's a valid question, especially since it's possible for a player to send the ball around the net (not over the net) in to the court. When the wider net is used, that possibility would be lesser. But again, it would be only fair since both players get the same chance. Besides, very rarely do you see that happen.
