Question:

Could anyone give me some advice about languages?

My true talent/love lies within languages. I'm 14, and I taught myself Swedish and I speak English as my native language. I'll be learning French throughout high school, then I'll probably learn Romanian or Latin. Anyway, my point is that I just don't know how I can utilize my love for languages in the professional world. I don't want to work for the military, or be a teacher in HS or anything like that. What could I do with a love for languages? I'm assuming being a linguistic professor would be interesting, but any help would be appreciated (:

  1. Dunno what its called in the US, but here in Canada its called Foreign affairs i think, its like the international section of the governement that deals with "foreign affairs" and they always want people that can speak other languages. Just a suggestion, If you Speak English and you learn French, and you've already got swedish, Immigrate to Canada and work for em.

  2. Work in international relations, for the government ect. Learning languages that are of interest to the US [like Arabic, Russian, French (the language of the UN and most international organizations) etc] will help you get government jobs in that area. Also businesses that need people to work with their international clients. The possibilities are endless. Go you! That is impressive. I would say if you love international relations, government or business jobs you are set! Good luck ^^

  3. Diplomatic Service? Despite how good the software is getting, only a human can pick up certain expressions, nuances etc.

  4. Translations services is a lucrative profession!  You can work with not-too-shabby pay to translate books, articles, or software.  I, myself, plan to work at some point as a Japanese translator--that, in particular, is very well-paying.

Alternatively, you can venture abroad to teach English to foreigners.

  5. learn Chinese -- > Mandarin

it will absorb your whole love to languages like a sponge

    and

it will be very important in the future

    undoubtedly

  6. Interpreters and translators make good money. You can try that in private and public companies.

  7. Short term, you can do volunteer work like the Peace Corps. As a career, one area to consider is with the State Department at foreign embassies or even something with the UN.
